ammo question, where is it?
does anyone know the real answer to what is happening with ammo these days. this is a BIG part of the manufactures business or maybe their only business and i don't think they are willingly going out of business.

Because of the Obama factor, the Dumocrat control of both houses and their antigun (ammo) agenda, people are buying guns and ammo at an unprecedented rate. There is a shortage of the most popular ammo, .223, 308, 9mm and .45acp. Manufactures will catch up but there is a shortage in some areas driving up the price. 0 -
Well walmart is pretty much cleaned out of ammo besides for shotgun shells from the walmarts I have been to. One place I was today and had lots of of ammo still was bass pro shops. I am actually on vacation in NC and always go to the bass pro shops while down here because love the store lol. I bought a bunch of ammo there and they had pretty much everything you could want. I know a lot of people(including myself) generally go to walmart first for ammo because they are cheaper so thats why they are out wiped out of ammo already. At home the only place besides walmart and gun stores to get ammo is dicks and they generally have a lot of ammo. I am gonna check them when I get back home. 0 -
I live in Central Texas and mainstream ammo .45,.40.,9mm,.357 has been virtually non-existent at Bass Pro Shop,Cabelas, Wal-mart for the last month. The same story for long guns. The counter guys can't tell you when the next shipment will arrive. They just tell you to call in the mornings to check availability, which is pointless. If you are not standing there when the doors open forget about it. Damn spooky to visit these outlets across the state and continually see shelf after shelf EMPTY, day after day. I went to gun shows in Austin and San Antonio over the last two weekends. The show starts at 9:00, by 10:00 vendors are SOLD OUT. A couple of the booths had placards hanging over their empty tables proclaiming Obama as "Salesman of the Month" for Jan.-Mar. .

In Tampa, the only problem with getting ammunition is when you go to the "big" stores like Walmart or Dicks Sporting Goods.
The local gun stores have plenty to offer. The prices may not be what you would pay at the other stores, but ammo is available.
The reason for the surge in lack of ammo is simply because everyone is grabbing what they can get now, in the event that "your" president & "his" congress shove something at us that is not liked.
Please don't be offended by the term "your" president, I simply do not claim him.0 -

This is silly ostrich talk. If you live in the USA, he's "your" President too, whether you like it or not.
I'm no fan of Obama but if he isn't the President, then who is?
As to the ammo, the ongoing shortage is multifactorial, but the biggest part of it right now is just people hoarding up ammo because of fears the Obama administration will tax it, ban it, or require some sort of idiotic "microstamping" measure that will also drive up costs, etc.
For the same reason, lots of people are afraid of another Clinton-style gun ban (the Vice President Biden was a sponsor of the original ban), and so people who never before would have considered buying militar-style guns have bought and are buying. For that reason, the prices of semi-automatics have skyrocketed in the last three months, with accompanying shortages. All the new black rifle owners are also buying ammo to go with their shiny new guns.
High demand with fixed supply = shortages and increased costs.
Secondary to that, the general economic decline has people afraid of a breakdown in law and order, with increased ammo storage. Likewise, the increasing spillover of drug-related violence from Mexico.
And lastly, with increasing "militarization" (for lack of a better word) of our State and local police forces, now we have more and more police heavily training with rifles and stocking the ammo. That's a lot of ammo stocked away etc.
FWIW, the stocks on the shelves in my area are thinner than usual, with shortages at some stores in some calibers, but its absolutely NOT true at all that everything is sold out. There is still ammo to be had in .22, .223, 9mm, and other popular calibers on the shelves in some places.0 -

Its getting off topic, but in my opinion the libs were wrong to say Bush wasn't "their" President, badly so.
Given that its generally not desirable to emulate those you despise, IMO, its just as wrong to say Obama isn't "your" President.
You don't have to like him to acknowledge that he's the President of the USA. Put differently, you salute the uniform, not the man.
Getting back on topic, its not entirely clear how much ammo prices will drop in the future, or even if they will at all. The price of ammo has just been going up and up and up for the last 4-5 years, averaging about a 15% increase every year.
In addition to the factors mentioned above, much of the increase over the past few years has been due to the ever-weakening dollar, metal scarcity, and associated super-high commodity costs. At least the dollar has strengthened lately, and commodity costs have gone down, but copper (for example) is not any more available, I don't think.
Clearly, Obama's election has only added fuel to the fire, but much of this has been going on since before Obama was even elected to the US Senate.
I suspect what will happen is that there will eventually be a "steady state" reached where supply and demand re-converge, and ammo prices will stabilize.
But I don't think we're going to see the ammo prices from even as recently as 2-3 years ago ever again.
If you've had the foresight to hoard ammo BEFORE the election, you'd be sitting pretty now.0 -
Law Enforcement stocking up on ammo?? We are having just as much of a problem, if not more than anyone to get the supplies we need. We run a 8-12 month backorder on ammo, this is ammunition used to qualify our officers, not stockpile for armageddon. Get real, look to the supply and demand issue, not law enforcement. Yes more agencies are requesting carbine ammo, however there is no stockpile. 0 -
The first event that drove the price of ammo up was the Chinese buy all of the resourcse they could get their hands on, the war and now a bunch of people that think they will not be able to get it any more! The price will keep going up until people don't have the money to buy it or sales slow because it gets to the point were people see that there is going to be a supply in the furture.
I don't think the leftiest are not going to do anyting until they win the 2010 elections to do anything with guns or ammo, they need to keep the conservitive seats they won in 2008 to get their socialist projects through and need to keep gun owners happy to get their people elected. Once they have the election in 2010 won to keep their majorities, that will be the time to make sure you have both gun and ammo.

I was at Sports authority today and they had 20% off all shotgun shells. I picked up slugs for cheap and they had plenty of ammo(atleast this one). Just a heads up to anyone if they are looking for some shotgun ammo
