Argentinian " Ranger"

A friend of mine was just given an Argentinian " Ranger" It is a shotshell, single shot, breakdown firearm similar to a Thompson Contender. It is old, approx World War II vintage, or so he was told. There is also a box of 25 #5 shotshells with it. It appears to be NIB. The box says "Industria Argentina" , Cal.14mm, No.5358. The serial # on the barrel is 803. Also on the box is " Pistola A Cartouche Para" and " Caza Y Defensa". Can you get ammo for it? what is it worth? What should he do with it?

    If it is a smoothbore shot pistol, he would do well to have nothing to do with it. Such things are severely restricted in the USA, to the point of being effectively illegal.
    I hope somebody will be along to advise you and him.

    I know nothing about this pistol.

    As far as smoothbore shotgun "pistols" being illegal that is not quite accurate.

    They are legal IF registered properly with the NFA. For an old gun like this I am not sure the proper way to do that and you will need help from a Class 3 dealer.

    It is likely rifled, albeit shallow rifling.
    These were made in the 1960s. Some were sold as the "Nimrod Snake Gun." These are entirely legal.
    If the gun is smoothbore, and chambered for a readilly available cartridge, it is an NFA weapon-which can not be registered (unless it was registered during the GCA '68 amnesty, or before manufacture.)

    14mm would be about .410 shotshell size.

    A couple of sources I found gave the 14mm shotshell as 32 gauge, one said 28 gauge. I don't know which is right, but 28 gauge is a standard US skeet gauge and is reasonably available, but 32 gauge is hard to come by.

    If the Ranger in question has even "scratch" rifling, then it is legal. If it does not, then it is covered by NFA and its legality is in question. I don't know all the ins and outs but my recollection agrees with Bill's and the OP's "friend" should find out before he does much about it.

    Please clarify this a bit more. Wasent the '68 amnesty just for full auto?

    I ask since all 5 other classes of NFA items can still be currently built at any time. I am currently buying an NFA item (suppressor) that was built less then 60 days ago. I could go out an make a AOW tomorrow and be legal if done right.

    I am not sure how it works with NFA guns (other then machine guns) that are not properly registered since they are still legal to make.

    GCA '68 was for all NFA weapons.
    Yes, you can apply for the tax stamp to make NFA guns (except MGs.)
    But, this gun is already manufactured. Once illegally manufactured, they can not be registered. You couldn't "make" an NFA weapon, and then register it.

    Years ago I ran across a similar single shot pistol, at a gun show. The guy was selling it as a "Flare Pistol". Since there wasn't any ammo with the gun and most folks in the U.S. know zilch about metric ammo, nobody was the wiser. By my reckoning, 14mm is probably what we call here in the States 28 Gauge.

    i have the exact same pistol.. i was in Argentina when i bought back in probably 65.. it broke my wrist the first shot i ever took with the damn thing.. beautiful gun.. impressive sized shells that literaly splintered tree's.. not surprised if its illegal. should be anyway.. need to be a pro to even shoot the thing! i would love to shoot it again.. i have feeling i never will because the ammo is just doesn't exist anymore. at least not in America. i have been looking for ammo for this gun ever since i got back from department of defense GPS mission i was on.

    PS: if your wondering about GPs and 1965, it was alive back then.. i was part of a group of scientists who were pioneering the mapping of the earth for the first time with GPS.. i have been to literally almost ever country in the world to map it. my job title doesn't even exist anymore. geodesy

    oo i thought i had the same gun you all were talking about but the one pictured is not the gun i have.
