remington 721

I was at a gun show Saturday and saw a Remington 721 in a .257 Roberts. I thought the 721s were only made in a .270, .30-06 and a couple Magnums. In the gun books it says that they made a .257 Roberts in the Remington 722 but the one I saw the dealer had 721 wrote on the tag and I am 99.99% sure I remember seeing 721 on the reciever.

Did Remington make the 721 in a .257 Roberts?

    I grew up with either a 721 or 722 in .257 Roberts, but I cannot tell you which one is which. I assume that one is the shorter action calibers such as .257, and the other is the longer action such as .270 and 30-06.

    This rifle was my father's, and is still in the family. He purchased it after WWII with the intention of letting my mom use it for deer hunting. I recall that this rifle perhaps cost about $30 less than a Winchester Model 70 at the time, which was a considerable amount of money then. My dad realized that my mom did not like to hunt, so my dad used it, and I shot my first two deer with it when I was 12. My dad always used the 117 grain roundnose soft points for everything, including elk and deer.

    To the best of my knowledge, excluding special runs for distributors and such, the .257 Roberts was released in the M722 rifle. A guess would be that some enterprising owner or gunsmith got a hold of an M722 barrel in .257 Roberts and put it on an M721 receiver. This gets you the long action for seating some of the longer hunting bullets out which you can't do in the short action magazine.

    Nononsense nailed it. The gunshow dealer was just sloppy in defining models. As you can see from the list above the 721 was a long action rifle, while the 722 was the short action version.

    I dang sure hope it price was fair, the condition good and you bought it!

    My 257r is a 722. New in 1954.

    Just curious, if you were to convert a 721 to 257, which original caliber would be easist to accomplish this switch? Do 30.06 & 270 have the same case head & body, albeit longer body?

    .257 is a 7x57 Mauser necked down, same basic .473" case head as the 06 and .270. The .264 and .300H&H are belted magnums.
