Identify Scope Mount and Rings - Savage 99
I have scoured Stroebel and cannot identify the side-winder scope mount and rings on this 1949 Savage 99 EG. Can you help? Who made the mount? Who made the rings? Photos below.

The entire thing is made by Pachmayr. It was one of the first products Pachmayr made starting way back in '29. 0 -
I am at work and do not have Stroebel with me. As I recall looking through it, I do not think it has Pachmayr even listed as a provider of mounts and rings. Maybe I missed it. Pachmayr provided so many products for firearms ..... surely including scope mounts and rings. Do you have the Pachmayr model number for this mount and ring set? 0 -

Mr. sandwarrior Sir, double Bingo, and thanks again. By the way, Stroebel DOES list Pachmayr, as follows, on page 562: "In 1935 Pachmayr introduced the first "Low Swing Side Mount." By the late 1940s the "Quick Detachable" feature was being touted. In late 1950 the "Low Swing Top Mount" was added. By the mid-1960s split or solid rings were offered in 0.750 inch, 0.875 inch, 1.0 inch, and 26 mm. By 1976, virtually any gun you could name had a Pachmayr scope mount available for it. .... " 0 -

Thank you. The reason I knew that is I have that exact same set-up on my Savage 99. It was done long before anyone ever thought that the 99's were going to be this years collector favorite. My rifle was made in 1915/1916 (depending on which book you consult) and obviously preceded "collectable" thought of it. I am not a collector however and very much enjoy having a scope on my rifle. Along with the takedown's slim-line style with fore-end snavel and the perch belly buttstock. I got the rifle because I used to shoot my uncles as a kid before he sold his. It didn't take me long to really start liking this one.0 -
I have an old Stith scope on a Beuler mount. On a Roy Gradle custom rifle. Why a Stith mount for a 99? Is this a special combination of rifle/mount that works particularly well? 0 -
That is indeed a Pachmyer tip-o-way. My late father used to swear by those. He had them on his 742's(one his, and one my mother's), and his model Four. They were of decent quality, where you could tip off your scope in the brush, and tip it back over, and it was pretty repeatable...not perfect though.

The stith doesn't require drilling and tapping. Therefore not ruining collector value. If the drilling and tapping is already done then it does more damage, collector-wise, to bring it back to original condition.0 -
sandwarrior, do I understand then that since my 99 has been drilled/tapped for the Pachmayr Lo-Swing mount that a Stith mount is of no good use on this rifle? 0 -
No, you can use the Stith if you prefer it, or the Pachmayr is incomplete in some way. As tsr1965 pointed out the Packmayr's weren't completely repeatable. I find that with mine. I will put two right next to each other using the scope and the third wanders off an inch-and-a-half, making a two inch group. When I use the peep sights I keep the groups around an inch to inch and a half.
If you take the Pachmayr off make sure you plug the holes and keep the screws for it together with the base. They aren't exactly common. One other problem I have with the Pachmayr is that it won't take a scope that has any of the elevation/windage adjustment hanging out of the left side. The left side has to be smooth. Which narrows my scope choice down to two old Weavers that I have.0
