    It sounds like you have an old Colt box of the style generally used prior to World War II, although some were used Post-War. These boxes are usually considered to be black, but varied a little from lot to lot. When exposed to sunlight, some fade to maroon.

    The end label should have the chambering designation printed on the label, so apparently someone has removed a portion of the end label where the chambering designation should be and written in a new designation. The serial number quoted is not a Colt serial number. With those alterations, it cannot be considered in exceptional condition, in my opinion.

    I suspect that someone altered the box to hold another gun at some time. If the serial number is written in pencil, it could be erased, but the alteration to the end label would require replacement of the end label, about impossible. A picture would help to better evaluate the box.
