UNKNOWN SW BREAKDOWN .22 PISTOL

Any help would be appreciated. This pistol is metal . The barrel is 3.75" long. On one side on the handle there is a S and on the other side there is a W. It looks like a revolver but it is a break down and looks like it would shoot a .22 short. The spring or whatever must be lose on the inside because there is no release when you pull the trigger. I just have not seen anything like it before. Thanks in advance.

    Only guessing without a photo, but sounds a bit like one of the old cast iron blank pistols. Is it held together with rivets?

    I listed it with no serious asking price. It is item 126158164 . I really don't know what is holding it together. It appears to be iron because there is rust but the barrel is unobstructed and looks like it would fire a .22 short. Thanks so much.

    It's .22 RF blank pistol dating from the 1930s. In recent months I have seen several of them sell for less than $30. With the other impossible things that have happened lately maybe yours will find a buyer at 500. Rotsaruck!

    edit A few facts: I have two of these now. Back in the '30s when I was a kid these were sold in hardware stores in three sizes, small 25 cents, medium 35 and large 50 cents. They shot a .22RF blank and the chamber would not take a .22 short or longer round. It would probably take a .22BB but I never tried one. Barrels were bored thru in a bit smaller size, bored thru from both ends with the bores not quite meeting by maybe .040".

    Looks like a "4th of July Gun". They date to the 19th Century, used as noise makers on holidays and celebrations. It appears that it was made to take a rimfire blank. These didn't stay in production long as they were to dangerous, if somebody tried to fire conventional ammo in them. As many were made of cast iron, the shooter was as apt to get hurt as the shootee.

    When I was a kid LOOONG ago, we used to load these with .22 short blanks and roll a BB down the bore, and shoot holes in the shed. An alternate method just as lethal and foolish was to cut the bullet of a regular .22 short off flush with case, or whittle the bullet to where it would chamber....

    It might be the perspective of the photo, but it appears the chamber is larger in size, then that required by a .22 cal case to me. Perhaps it was made for a larger rimfire blank.
