The Silencer used in the movie Shooter?
First I want to say I understand Hollywood makes things up but the movie Shooter is not your ordinary movie straight out of Hollywood.
I was wondering about the silencer that is seen in the movie Shooter? It was used supposedly used on .22 in the scene where he saves the FBI agent in a shed on the water, all it looks like is a plastic water bottle with something inside.... is possible to make one of these?

And they have very limited life spans. One assumes it is NOT legal to have a supressor without a $200 BATF stamp, even if it is a 2 liter soda bottle. 0 -

Can you make one, sure. Is it legal, maybe. Does it work well, not really.
It is illegal under federal law to have unregistered devices for suppressing firearms. It is a 20 year stay in club Fed and $250,000 fine if you get caught. A pop bottle used this way would be illegal unless you did the paperwork and paid the $200 tax.
There was a company making LEGAL adapters for attaching pop bottles to guns. This adapter requires all the same paperwork as a real silencer.
With pop bottles you get one semi accurate shot. I say semi since the bullet contacts a surface just after leaving the barrel. Also I am not sure how many shots the bottle will hold up too. If you were to fill the bottle with some kind of packing then every shot will fly differently depending on how it travels though the media.
Why not just buy a real and legal one? For the .22 they are not that expensive, they work great, and you dont have a pop bottle hanging off your gun. If you need to do something to work in a SHTF situation and had no other options I could see it.
This gun is able to make cloverleaf groups and is quieter to fire with live ammo then dry firing.

ok thx.... i was really just wondering if was possible to make one and if they were accurate at all. oh yea i'll deffently buy a legal one, i going to school to be a fed not be arrested by them!!!!!lol like i said i was just curious.

Hollywood. and kind of a knock off of a section in one of the books were the shooter (a Viet Nam era sniper in the book) uses a scope case as a flash hider for a while. 0 -

Yes, you can reduce the sound signature of a .22 rifle by putting a plastic bottle on the end of it.
It will probably work for about one shot.
Unlike in the movie, you probably would NOT be able to use said rifle as a sniper gun because the bullet will strike the plastic of the bottle, and lose all accuracy.
And of course, unless you fill out a ream of paperwork, get approval, and pay a hefty tax, doing this in the USA is a Federal crime. So don't try it.
If you want to shoot your .22 silently, you can
a. Actually fill out the paperwork, pay the tax, and get a "real" suppressor (assuming its legal to do so in your jurisdiction; silencers are banned by State law in some states).
b. Buy primer-only ammo (Aguila makes some) which is essentially completely silent from a .22 rifle. Of course its also not much more powerful than a pellet from a pellet gun (and probably LESS accurate), but it is a way to practice shooting a "real" gun in your basement, etc.0 -
To add briefly to above (which is good info)
The pop bottle works just well enough to subject you to a fine of $250,000, and up to 10 yrs in a Federal prison. And HollyWeird shows a lot of things that are not realistic (still remember Rambo firing an M-72 LAW thru a helicopter windscreen from the INSIDE)
Supersonic bullets generate a CRACK from breaking sound barrier. Suppressors reduce sound from muzzle blast, not bullet. For true quiet, a subsonic bullet AND a good suppressor.
For a .22, check Yankee Hill Machine. About $300 and change, plus having weapon threaded, suppressor mounted- and pay the $200 Federal Tax, plus any state taxes.
OR- spend $5 for a box of CCI .22 CB Longs. Or Aguilla Colibri. Both are quiet enough I shoot indoors without hearing protection- you can hear bullet hit backstop. Perfectly legal, no taxes, and no new roomie named Bubba (who, BTW, just told you YOUR name is now Nancy)0 -
