I want to buy an AR15 receiver, caliber???

Do you need to specify the caliber when ordering a striped receiver?
I want the 223, not one of the other chamberings.

    The standard 223 reciever works for multitude of other calibers. Just make sure its mil spec and it will work.

    Make sure it is 7075 T6 grade aircraft aluminum.

    In a word - No. The receiver has nothing to do with the cal. What cal are you looking for?

    Sure it does. The 308 length (AR10) need a longer mag well, etc. And of course the pistol caliber glock mag lowers from Olympic.

    But if you want standard 223/5.56 go with what Wehrmacht says.

    One more thing to Look for, or should I say look out for. Make sure it is not made by Hesse, Blackthorne, or Vulcan. They are absolute junk. There is more probability of you getting a bad one than a good one.

    The others have posted lots of good info. There are 2 main styles of receivers.

    AR-15 that fits that can build the majority of caliber guns out of. Pretty much any round that is short enough to fit in a standard AR mag well can be built with this.

    AR-10 that fits the larger cases. The AR-10 was originally built for the .308 round so anything that is larger then .223 length but shorter then .308 will run in these lowers.

    On title 1 firearms ("normal") the markings on the receiver do no not matter.

    There are also several custom lowers made for dedicated mags like the OA Glock mag or M1 Carbine mag lowers, Colt pinned 9m lowers, COBB did make one for .30-06, MGI mags a lower that can be adapted to many different mags, there is a company makes dedicated Grease gun lowers. I am sure there are many more out there too, but that is just off the top of my head.

    Not to split hairs here but the question was about the AR15 not the AR family of firearms. I have AR15 receivers built with 223, 9mm, 5.7, & 22LR. The AR10 is somewhat a special case.

    The only thing special about an AR-10 is it is a bit bigger. With the proper engineering principals applied, it also could be converted to sub calibers with dedicated uppers, just like the little brother AR-15 with the 22LR. The only thing is, that it has not been done yet.
