AR10 Magazine Interchangability

I was under the impression that thr DPMS, STONER SR25 and the original Armalite AR10 all can use the same magazine. The newer Armalite uses a modified M14 mag. The reason why I ask is that I have an original AR10 as was produced in the 1950-60's. I recently purchased some C-Products AR10 mags that supposedly fit the DPMS version. They do not come close to fitting my early AR10. Can anybody shed some light on this. Thanks in advance Curt

    Only DPMS mags will fit DPMS & nothing else, would be willing to buy these DPMS mags for A10 from you if not to high on price, just email me & let me know,

    This is my DPMS LR308 ... I bought them a few years ago when I had a Stoner SR25 ... they all work perfect in the Stoner and the DPMS. I have 2 DPMS mags and 8 original AR10 mags. Having the mags was the main reason I went with the DPMS instead of an AR10.

    Almost forgot ... I did have to make the bolt stop finger a touch narrower to fit the groove in the AR10 mags.

    KK pinpoints the problem. These guns vary from manufacturer to manufacturer. Add another magazine manufacturer and there can be a problem. Some magazine manufacturers quality control is so poor that I have seen magazines made for a particular gun that would not even go into the magazine well.

    Who made the lower receiver for your original AR-10? I have a Sudanese model with a Central Kentucky Arms lower receiver, and I had to deepen the relief for the magazine latch because it would not protrude deep enough into the magazine well to securely hold the magazines.

    I know for sure that Stoner and original "waffle" AR-10 magazines are the same pattern, but I am not familiar with the manufacturer you mention, so that may be a magazine brand with poor quality control.

    I would contact C-products with your question. From my understanding they have excellent customer service.

    My original lower receiver is also a CKA Arms lower. On the original waffle mags there are 2 cuts on the same side of the mag with one of the cuts having a rounded edge and on the new ones there is only 1 rectangular cut. The waffle mags slide in and out perfectly. On the new mags 1 will go in about an 1-1/2 inches and the other about a 1/2 then they both just stop. I don't want to force them in for fear they won't come out. I have some of the C-Products 6.8 mags and they work fine. That's why I posted the original question as I had heard that they all used the same mag. I have 8 of the waffle mags and a few more can never hurt. I would like to try an original DPMS mag to see if that fits.
    In the mean time I'll try to get a hold of C-Products to see what they have to say. Thanks for your replys Curt

    May I pick your brain?. I have a DPMS LR.260. If I ride the charging handle home slowly the tip of the round will jam against the back of the barrel. If I let charging handle go from fully to rear-the round will chamber. But, if I then remove the round the tip will have an angle ding on it. This happens with all ammo. I feel the round should not have to bang against the rear of the barell and bounce into the chamber. I am sending the upper back to DPMS to see if they can fix it. Just wondering if anyone else's AR-10 act the same way.

    This is not the proper way to load a semi auto gun of ANY kind. The actions are ment to be pulled fully "to the rear" and released. This is exactly what happens every time you pull the trigger so do the same for the first round.


    I dont have an answer for your other question but I would get ahold of DPMS.

    +1 to that, there is nothing wrong with your rifle other than operator error. Don't ride the charging handle!

    Very important. You mentioned that you let the charge handle "fly" on its own momentum, and the round chambers OK. Cased closed on that aspect. Now, the bullet mutilation problem..

    Perform this test: In a safe area have one of your "buds" exert upward pressure on the magazine while you charge the chamber. If you don't get bullet tip mutilation, then the upper is OK, and there's no reason to send it in. The problem rests with the magazine being a few thousandths lower than the gun likes.

    Does the [bullet mutilation] occur when both the left and right rounds are being stripped from the magazine into the chamber? If so, then the magazine is just a tad too low, and it would need a hands-on in order to find out how to "snug" the magazine just a tad higher in the receiver.

    You also may wish to place a wooden dowel of the same size as the case diameter under, and parallel to the magazine lips (just like a bullet would sit), and gently tug upwards, the goal being to angle the front of the cartridge a little higher. The preceding paragraph should not be attempted unless you really have a feel for working magazine lips. You can easily ruin a magazine this way.

    bottom line: my gut feeling is that the upper may not need any work. Best, Joe
