Model 96 Swedish Mauser

I have found a model 96 Swedish mauser in Sweden that is in supposedly mint condition. They say it has been a display piece for many, many years and came straight from Swedish military storage.

Manufactured: 1916 in Sweden
Serial number: 398665

The only issue is that the bolt handle is bent downward and they think it might have been a sniper rifle or something special from the factory. Does anyone have any info about special factory issues of the model 96?

    The Swedes made M96 target rifles, with the bent bolt and special peep sights.
    They also manufactured sniper rifles for scopes, which also had the bent bolt.

    I would take the stories of its past with healthy skepticism. There are far more shotguns for sale marked Wells Fargo, than Wells Fargo ever bought!

    I don't know where your located? But if your a U.S. resident, I wouldn't be importing a Model 96 from Sweden. There still a lot of them available in the States in excellent condition. Many thousands were imported over the years, most were in excellent condition.

    There are two large gun auctions on the net, besides many collectors sites devoted to these Swedish rifles, as they are very highly thought of.

    If you have the money and willing to be selective, you will have a better chance to pick up a minty Swede 96, a lot cheaper then importing one from Sweden. Specially with the way the economy is in the toilet now, folks are needing money and starting to sell their toys, to get it. My 2?.

    Allen [:D][:0]...I have that book [:D]...like I said, don't know a lot about the M-96...why I referred him to the C & R forum...guess I could have looked at my own book, duh...[^]

    Well, I go along with your thinking, Why bend the bolt for peep sights?
    But, for some reason the Swedes did it.

    I could send a couple of pics of the rifle if I could figure out to insert them into this message. But it has a ladder site so maybe the bolt is not original. I was going to verify matching serial numbers with the owner anyway.

    Is it the M96 long rifle with the 29 inch barrel?

    The Swedes made a lot of M38 carbines with a 23 inch barrel and a bent bolt.
    Many of the M96 long rifles were modified to this configuration, and do have the ladder sights.
