Red Dot on AR flat top Question

I have a cheap red dot I want to give a try.

For accuracy, should I mount it forward on the rail, near the back, or in the middle?

    the further forward you mount it the smaller the dot will be relative to the target , therefore more precise.
    but the effect will be so small, just put it where it is balanced.

    if you want accuracy try a low power variable

    I do have a 10x Super Sniper on it now, but I have the opportunity to hog hunt a close quarters and a red dot was recommended- so WTH?
    Might be fun!

    I have taken hogs at 15 yards and want to do something a bit different.

    Put it in a position where YOU can easily see the dot/reticle when you shoulder the rifle. If that means it is as close to your eye as you can get it so be it. If it it means it is mounted on a railed gas block so be it.

    Put it where it feels natural to you. What I do when mounting optics/sights is I shoulder the rifle with my eyes closed. If when I open my eye (s) I can not see the sight it is not in the right place.

    I'm going Sat AM and will try all the positions- got plenty of time, but want the mostest accuracy!

    This should be fun and I need FAST target aquisition.

    When the bucks roll in this summer, I'm adding a HoloSite.

    On my STG-556 I have set the EOtech on it as close to my Eye as I can, it seems to just make for better shooting, But On my Ar-15's all my sights are forward because of the BUIS's. But I like EOtechs close to my eye so the FOV is as big as possible when shooting up close.

    As for Aimpoint type sights I cant really tell a big deferance. I usually mount them up front.

    Or if 15 yards still seems too boring (boaring?) try a spear! [;)]

    Anyway, intrinsic accuracy isn't affected by where the dot sight is mounted, though your ability to acquire the sight quickly and place the dot accurately *might* be.

    As mentioned, placement can affect your field of view, perceived size and BRIGHTNESS of the dot, and your ability to keep both eyes open when shooting.

    Other issues that MIGHT be worth considering are: will all the other stuff on your gun (eg bolt, brass deflector, back up sights, etc) clear the sight; will you want to put on a SECOND IR or magnifying sight BEHIND the dot sight, and overall profile and balance.

    Nowadays most of these sights are so light that balance isn't really a factor, but it might be depending on what kind of sight and what kind of gun you are mounting it on.

    Ultimately, whichever way YOU like best, is the best way, and if you can't tell any difference, it doesn't make any difference.

    Years back, I saw a film of a spear hunt of either a boar or a bear.
    The hunter held the spear and didn't throw it. It was a gory mess.

    Don't forget to resight in the AR once you've settled on a position for it.

    It just seems to make sense to me to have it mounted forward.

    The dot is brightness adjustable and the front post is not really in the way.
    Should be fast aquisition tho. It's also very light compared to the 10x scope.
    I really want the EoTech, but someday....
    I enjoy shooting my buddy's AR with the EoTech.
