Browning Auto 5 12 gauge

I have recently aquired an Auto 5 and I'm having trouble discerning what the actual serial # is. In front of the breach on the bottom of the gun there is the stamped number 68597, on the same area about 1" above that number is an M. The question is. Does that M need to be included in the serial number or does it mean something different? Everything I find on Brownings website implys that if the numbers have a letter in them they should be together and were used as a date code. Does anybody out there know what year my Auto 5 was manufactured?

  Yes, your A-5 was manufactured in the latter part of the year 1956. The "M" is not part of the serial number, but it does identify the gun as a "Standard" weight versus a Lightweight.
