MG 34 Caliber

Were MG-34 Machine guns made in any calibers other than 8MM? Is the 8X57 round the same as the 7.92MM? Thanks.

  To answer your second question, 8mm Mauser is the same thing as 7.92x57 is the same thing as 8x57.

  To the best of my knowledge all MG 34's were in 8 X 57, which is the same as 7.92. The MG 34 was a fine machine gun but to complicated and expensive as compared to the MG 42 that replaced it. Another drawback of the 34, was the ammo had to kept very clean, and preferably very lightly lubricated.

  Dear rjc...the answers are no to the first question and yes to the second. It was the second best squad automatic weapon of WWII, only superseded by the MG 42 which, when engaged, put the fear of The Maker into those anywhere near it!

  I believe some were converted to .308 some time after the war.

  I saw a US Army training film, they were trying to brainwash WW2 recruits into not being scared of the MG 42.
  The announcer said, "Its bark is worse than its bite."
  Yeah, right, get out from behind that mike in Hollywood, go to the battlefield in France and face that gun, and tell me its bark is worse than its bite.
