I was given an old cavalry gun by my uncle and would like to figure out what the history is...can you advise? I have pictures.

    Bolt action single shot shotguns aren't big buck items. They are considered utility guns and usually valued in the $50 to $150 range. If functional and in at least Very Good condition. Mossberg made many similar shotguns to the one you describe, yours happens to date to the 1930's. This was years prior to the government requiring serial numbers on all long guns.

    now how can it be from the 1880"s if the company started makeing guns in 1919..model 75 = 1933-1940

    And as stated it has a value around $100. Had it been made in 1880 it would have been black powder and could not shoot modern shells.

    Story and gun don't jive IMHO you should of asked this question BEFORE you bought it just hope this lesson did not cost you too much or that you can get your money back.

    Sometime a design is finished and patient prior to production and sits on the shelf and becomes a later production device.
