What are the best whitetail rounds in 7.62x54r? I've heard good things about Sellier and Belliot, but are there any other ones that are as good?

    i have used a wide range of manufacture of 7.62x54r the best i have found was sellier and belliot and second was commerical wolf (gold) both bullet grains used was the 203 grain bullet.

    I not sure of were i got them. I'm sure it was right here on gunbroker as this is my main source for buying them. I had some hotshot 180 gr sp ammo for this. I hated using the 203gr for deer just tore them up something bad.

    I have used Sellier & Bellot 180 gr soft point with great success on whitetails; I never felt a need to look for anything else. Accuracy and bullet performance were just right.

    Big R and a few other stores have sold some 7.62X54R Winchester 180 gr for 18$ a box of 20.
    They shoot awesome and expand well!

    the rifle i have used was a fin m-39 it always shot very good with the 203 grain i have a russian 91/30 it shots better with the 147 grain ball and 180 grain sp. but for accuracy i have always used my m-39.

    I prefer Norma. Norma loads up to the cartridges potential and sticks a premium bullet in the case.

    What are you shooting them in? If it is a semi auto like the PSL DO NOT shoot the heavy loads. This gun was ment to run on Light Ball ammo (~150 gr).

    I have been using the 7.62x54r for about 5 years now (since the Mosin's became dirt cheap). You can get a good round out of most of the surplus, but I don't like how hot they generally run. Other ready-mades are too expensive for my tastes given what you get for performance. Since I already loaded my own rounds for my other platforms, it seemed natural to add one more die to my kit. Therefore, after a bit of a longish intro, if you really want the performance then start loading your own.

    Add up the dollars and you will find that by the time you buy 100 rounds of the Norma or about 200 rounds of most other brands, you can purchase a die and a decent Lee BEGINNER'S kit. Not only will this be cheaper in the long run, but you will find that determining what your platform likes to eat is fun. Once you do find what your platform enjoys, your shot groups will tighten on their own to some degree.

    I just bought a quantity of Barnaul 203-gr SP, but I haven't tried them out yet. One thing I did do was to buy some PRVI 150-gr SP .310 bullets, and load them into 'Albanian' brass-cased surplus from which the 148-gr LPS bullets had been pulled, with the original powder charges and corrosive (if they actually are corrosive) primers. They shot extremely well. I also have some Remington Core-Lokt 180-gr bullets that are made for the .303 that I will try, with new powder charges or as completely reloaded ammo in some boxer-type cases. I'll have to post on how this all comes out.

    You can reload your own for hunting purposes.

    The key to reloading for the 7.62x54R Mosin Nagant is proper bullet size since Soviet manufacturing tolerances were so loose. Slug the bore and select a proper diameter bullet.

    I use Hornady .303/7.7 Japanese bullets in mine with 0.312" diameter. They work great! I shoot surplus stuff for plinking.
