Simmons Whitetail Classic Scope?
What do the experts think of this scope? Compare the optics to a Leupold VX-II. Better? Worse? What's Simmons like to deal with on a warranty issue?

Just got one of the 6.5-20x AO versions, great scope. Nice and clear. Never used a Leopold so I can't comment on that.
Had to use extra high rings to get the scope to clear the barrel (barely!) on my Savage 93fv.
This scope is getting good reviews from folks on rimfirecentral.com0 -

Many if not all rifle buffs have tried cheap scopes at one time or anouther. We all have our stories and mine is that five or six years back I tried one of the Simmons 2x10x44 Whitetail Classics. Midway was selling them cheap. It's optics were ok, not great, but good enough. I had it on a .308win and after a half a dozen range runs it died. Simmons at that time was trying to keep up with Burris and Luepold's warranty. They replaced it and I was impressed enough that I bought a couple more. They all died over the next couple of years and Simmons was still sending out replacements of current production similar scopes, which I proceeded to list and auction off as I was done with their products. I was eventually down to my last original scope when Simmons was bought by a conglomerate and stoped honoring their warranty on old stock and I was stuck with it. These days I would not buy a Simmon scope and if one came my way I would auction it off asap. If you think you will buy one I would suggest that you look into the warranty as you will probably need it. Asking the seller will not be enough, go to Simmons and ask them. I do not currently kown what their warranties are these days. Personally I would buy Burris Fullfield II as my minimum rifle scope and that if you insist on the cheap stuff then use them on light recoiling rifles like 22s and such. Have only 1 Simmons & will never get another, mainly due to parallax errors.0 -
Wouldn't buy one retail with all of the other, better options, but I have one of the large, AO variables and it has served well for several years now. The price was right and so far so good. I do, however, reserve my Leopolds for serious hunting. 0 -
If you put it on a rimfire it should do fine. I have a couple of Simmons scopes on .22s and they do alright. If you are scoping a centerfire, bite the bullet (no pun intended) and buy a Burris Signature Select, put it in Burris Signature rings and never look back. Does Simmons have a one word warrenty? Burris does. That word is Forever. 0 -
Am no expert but am firm believer in " ya get what ya pay for with glass" Had one once on a 30-06 cost me my elk that year. took a shot and one of the crosshairs broke! only shoot Luepold now! 0 -
i got a whitetail classic 3-10X a few years ago at a steep discount. i put it on my 22 Hornet and it has been fine for that purpose, but i would not put it on anything more powerful nor for more serious hunting.
+1 for burris. have several and love them all.0
