S&W Nyclad Bullets, Anyone familiar with ?

I picked up several thousand S&W NyClad bullets a few years ago in .38/357, various bullet shape SWC, Round, and either Truncated Cone or Hollowpoint and haven't tried loading them until today. Either I'm doing something wrong or these things are meant for professionals.

After cutting the cladding off a couple of bullets and crushing a couple of cases I found that you have to bell the case more than for, say, a wadcutter. Then, after loading a dozen or so up, I found they will not chamber in any of three guns I tried. The case doesn't look bulged but they are definitely too large to go into the cylinder.

Am I doing something wrong? Do these bullets require a special die or something to get them to load? I tried running them through a .358 sizing die, they went through with little or no effort at all and the nylon cladding was not disturbed. I haven't tried loading those yet, perhaps I should try sizing them to .356 first and see if they will chamber then.

Anyone else run into this problem ??

    You said you had to bell the case mouth. After you do this are you crimping the case back into the bullet. I have a few boxes of these new but I have never tried to hand load any.

    OK, yes indeed , years ago when still 'hand-loading' we bought a bunch of these , a really good bullet , but you must open up the case mouth just a lil bit ???

    Had the same prob long ago, Dan. They are very undersized on the OD's. My particular lot of Nyclads were mixed RN, HP & SWC blems, & most were not just u/s, but horribly out-of-round/disfugured, as well. But heck, they were cheap !!

    Solution was to bell the heck outta the case mouth & then deep-seat the bad Nyclad (similar to a full wadcutter configuration, aka flush to end of case). Then taper-crimp. Adjust the powder charge down/lighter, if necessary. Some of these bad SWCs even had to be seated BACKWARDS. Bear in mind these were very light plinking loads ONLY, & performance was very erratic (wild groups, etc), but they all fired w/out any probs.

    Thanks, guys, I knew I wasn't the only one with these bullets. I did find that after running them through a .358 sizer they seemed to be a lot better, I was afraid running them through the sizer was going to sheer the nylon cladding off but doesn't seem to affect it. Before sizing they run up to .008" oversize, don't know if that is the way they were made or if maybe there is a little lead corrosion going on under the cladding that's swelling them up a bit.

    Regardless, I will bell the case mouth aggressively and size them all before use. I only want them for light plinking loads anyway, just hated to throw several thousand bullets away 'cause there is no way I am going to melt them with all that nylon on them !!!!
