    Well I dont know what FLA is but depending on what you plan on doing with the kit you could find yourself with an NFA (National Firearms Act of 1934, so it has been around a while) violation.

    By definition a Rifle has to have a minimum of a 16" barrel length and the one you linked only has a 10.25" barrel. If you put barrel less then 16" on a rifle you now have an NFA item called a SBR (Short Barreled Rifle). While SBR is not illegal IF properly approved PRIOR to making or taking possession or you are in violation. NFA violations carry a 20 year/$250,000 fine at the Federal level, not something you want to mess with. You will also need to see what if any NFA items are legal in your state.

    While it is their choice I feel it is in bad taste for Blackthorn not to post in their ad that NFA rules need to be followed with this. Blackthorn is one of the WORST companies out in the firearms world. This is just their latest name, they also go by Hess and Vulcan. A short web search will turn up more info then you ever wanted to know.

    Not sure why you wanted to ship it to a gun shop as the parts are not considered a firearm so they do not need a dealer to transfer them. IF you do not own a lower or have one in your possession it is legal to own this kit without restrictions. If you were to get or have a lower you only have 2 choices for it.

    One is to read up and get info on how to legally own a SBR, if they are legal in your state and go that way. The other option would be to build a legal AR pistol out of it.

    Or is it both??
    If it's the lower, it's legal. If its the upper, it's not.

    Lower but things get confusing if you have *any* AR lower that could accept the upper in your posession.

    Kevin, you didn't do your homework before you bought, & now you are going to have to dig yourself out of this mess.

    While Nwcid is right, I see 3 other options for you:

    1) Tell Blackthorne you aren't going to pay since they did not describe it as an "NFA kit", & take your beating on feedback.

    2) As soon as you get the kit delivered to your house, post it on GB at half the price you paid, & take your financial beating, or

    3) Take the kit to a gunsmith (NOT the shop you visited before) & pay him to replace the barrel with a 16" barrel, buy a lower for you, & assemble the entire rifle.

    3b - have said 'smith permamently attach a long muzzle device of some type to bring barrel length to over 16"

    Fourth option - purchase a stripped lower receiver and build a gun as a pistol. Starting in late 2008 the 4473 form was changed from long guns and handguns only to long guns, handguns AND stripper receivers. A new stripped AR receiver may be built into an AR pistol in which case the 10" bbl is fine - just don't attach a shoulder stock or your back to NFA problems.

    In this instance, an AR lower receiver built as a handgun solves your NFA constructive possession problems.

    You could also WELD on a long flash hider to bring the barrel up to 16".
    If you want a light, handy carbine, put a 16" pencil barrel on it.
