What am I looking for? 9mm pistol...

ok, I've been thinking about getting an autoloading pistol in 9mm Luger (9x19).I was thinking of a Sig p6, but when they finally came off back order they went up 50 bucks. Seen a ruger p89 on a GB auction, seems ok maybe. but am wondering what else is out there...
I want something cheap, say $300 or less
Use is plinking/target shooting, so 3.5" barrel or longer
Not looking for darringers, CCW compacts, revolvers
Yes I know Rohms, lorcins, and hi points are cheap, but whats a step or two above that? Suggestions?

    Look at the EAA Witness - a bit more than your 300, but not much. And for an extra 200 you can convert from 9mm to 38 super, 40s&w, 10mm, 45acp, or 22lr. I'd go for a 22lr kit first...

    Everyone I've know who had a Ruger P89 eventually sold it off and upgraded. Whereas with my S&W M59 and Glock I've never ever even been tempted to sell......

    You may be able to find P226 police tradeins. I know they were fairly common not too long ago.

    Ruger's P89 are not very popular, but they function well, and are cheap! Send a little more and go with a Springfield XD.

    Not for $300 you won't!

    Tanfoglio (EAA) Witness is a very nice gun for not MUCH more than $300, though you might have a hard time finding one for $300 or less nowadays. You can also try looking for the TZ-75, which is essentially the identical gun, imported by Springfield before EAA started importing them.

    If your absolute max is $300, that still leaves a number of other quite serviceable 9mm pistols.

    Definitely stay away from Lorcin, Jennings, Jimenez, Hi-Point.

    Personally, I'm biased against the Spanish pistols (Star, Astra, Llama), but you could certainly find good examples in your price range. I just think you'll have an easier time selling some of the better name guns later, should you ever want to trade up to something better. That goes also for Egyptian Helwan (Beretta copy), which you might see for under $300.

    In a full sized pistol, I'd check out Ruger p95; for a more classic conversation piece you can still find a Walther p1 or p38 in that range; All metal Smith trade-in 9mms (including 5906, 5943, 910, etc) can still be had for about $300, and they're a bargain at that price; Taurus PF-92 (Beretta clone) is another gun that isn't bad that you might find used for under $300.

    Smith Sigmas (Glock clone) can be had for under $300, but personally, I'd rather go for one of the all metal guns.

    Look no further then an Arcus 94, it is a very well made, modernized (Bulgaria) copy of the Browning Hi Power, accepts all BHP mags. I've had one for a few years, and it has not let me down, not once. They are accurate, smooth shooters, and are reliable enough to carry if you wanted to.

    I believe the P-6 is still the best bang for your dollar today. The EAA series is also a very good hand gun. You would not go wrong with ither. My 2 cents [8D]

    I was really suprised how well the ruger p89 handled when I shot my friends. This seemed to be a nice, less expensive gun. Comfortable to shoot.

    Suggestion: Save up for something better than what you could get for $300 in today's firearms market. Remember the old saying - you get what you pay for. And today you royally pay for what you get. Don't wait too long, though. Ever since the 08 election, guns and ammo have grown wings and flown off the gun store shelves. Don't rule out a good quality used handgun. My first 9mm was a used Glock 17 for $460 including night sights. Second 9mm was a used Glock 19 for $460 including night sights. Third was a Walther P99AS for $600 NIB.
