Colt Super
I want to reduce my new SXS to legal minimum dimensions.

Can someone please tell me what they are, and how they are measured ??

    18 inches. Alot of people play it safe and cut them at 18 1/4.

    Measured from end of barrel to end of chamber.

    18" is minimum for a shotgun without going NFA. To measure properly take a dowel (or similar) and make a mark at 18". With the action closed drop the dowel down the barrel. Cut anywhere higher then the mark. Keeping an extra 1/4-1/2" is not a bad idea, just in case.

    Doug you should inspect the rib between the barrels before you cut her down it might weaken it.Shooting buck might stress it out.You are cutting 1 1/2 maybe 1 3/4 is it worth it to loose the front bead???

    The fed has established that shotguns must have a minimum barrel length of 18 inches and rifles or pistls with a shoulder buttstock to be 16 inches (that's why contender makes their super 16 barrels 16 1/4 inches long; they can be used as a handgun with a pistol grip or a rifle with a rifle shoulder buttstock). Barrel lengths, as far as I know, are measured from the muzzel back to the beginning of the chamber (where the shell would be fully seated in the chamber).

    358- for a shotgun or rifle, barrel length includes the chamber. At least as far as the ATF goes. There is a prescribed method of measuring, by inserting a dowel of "near" bore diameter from the muzzle onto a closed bolt (cocked, so firing pin does not protrude), mark dowel at muzzle, withdraw, measure from breech end of dowel to the mark.

    Anyone that shortens a barrel, take care- not only that you have minimum length (plus a little for rulers that vary) but the cut is SQUARE to the bore. Use of a pipe cutter on a single barrel will produce a ridge inside. Much better to chuck into a lathe, and cut it.

    Shotgun- minimum barrel 18", overall length 26"
    Rifle- Minimum barrel 16", overall length 26"

    Less than that, you now have a class III SBS or SBR.

    The only problem with this approach is that you first you have to cut the barrel down to less than 18" to see the mark.
