Suggest old rifle for old scope...

I like old Redfield Widefield scopes, and I have one that needs a rifle.

These are the scopes that sit low on the barrel and have a sight picture that looks like an old TV set.

The scope is a blued, variable 2-7, 1 inch tube.

I'd like to put it on a classic looking rifle, in a classic caliber - .25 or larger, like 7X57, .25-06, .257 Roberts, .303 Brit, .45-70 - something like that - that I could buy for less than $400.

The rifle in question will be more desirable if it shows some "character". No Weatherby mark V shinys.

Not a 94, but maybe a 95

Please help me build a list of potential firearms to consider.

Do you think I should post this in GD ??

    That's a nice problem to have! I have one of those scopes mounted on a Remington Classic .250 Savage but I doubt if you buy one anymore for $400. I think, if I were in your place, I'd start looking for a well-done Springfield sporter--there are usually several of those on the auction side. Some have even been re-barreled for other cartridges than the .30/06. However, there are few cartridges more classic than the 06.

    BTW; This is a good topic; should get a lot of opinions.

    pearyw beat me to the punch...a Savage 99 in either 250-3000, 300 Savage, or 358 Winchester.

    The next thing to do would be to auction that scop off and get something to put on a New rifle....

    But old is as old does...hehehehe

    Second RCrosby on the 721 or 722. Your $400 budget is going to be problematic on all suggested so far I think.

    Id suggest a classic sporterized 98 Mauser in 240 Weatherby.

    There is a 45-70 on a mauser action on the auction side ending in about 12 hours for less than $400.

    Thanks Lance - it's a nice rifle, but the auction ends too soon for me to have time for me to shop around some more.

    If it lasted a couple more days, I'd prolly give it a shot.
