NEWBIE NEEDS GUIDANCE

I'm BRAND NEW at selling Firearms through GunBroker. I live in Florida.

I just listed a 1907 J. Stevens Double Barrel Shotgun. On Florida's NRA site, they say an ANTIQUE is 1917 or earlier. Your site lists an Antique has had to be made in the 1880's.
(1) Do I need to ship an Antique Firearm to an FFL Dealer?

(2) If I have to ship it TO and FFL Dealer, does it have to be Dealers that are reciprocal to Florida or can it be any state?

(3) And, your site says not to say it is a Firearm, yet I have to have FFL paperwork on the shipping package...how can I do this without disclosing its a Firearm? So, do I have to disclose that its a Firearm to the PO, UPS, or FedEx?

(4) How do I send an Invoice to my Buyer that includes my $10 packaging fee (Box, Bubble Wrap, Tape)and also include the Shipping & Insurance Quote?

(5) If I am paid with a Cashier's Check/Money Order/Personal Check, even when these items supposedly "clear", they really don't clear for sometimes up to 30 days (I've experienced a bad Money Order on eBay). Can I say on my ad that there will be a 30 day wait until their payment completely clears all Banks before I agree to ship the Firearm?

Thanks for your guidance. Just want to make sure I'm doing everything right and not screw up.

    Hi guys,,,first post here.

    I just bought my first assault rifle. It is a DPMS 308-T 16" barrel. I now want to take off the current hand rail and replace it with a quad rail. Is this difficult to do? (I am pretty handy), could you give me some pointers on dismantling it and putting on the new one. I also could use some advise on a decent brand, I am looking to make it a bit lighter with a carbine length quad. Next I could use guidance on a decent set up for optics. I am going for the home defence/300-500 yard target shooting. I know it is a broad spectrum, it has me baffled. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks

    If I were a fan of those rifles, I think there is a website called something like www.ar15.com and I'd take a look there.

    I'm not sure of the site, but someone here will be happy to correct me.

    Welcome to the forums here on Gunbroker.

    It is really the media, and the politicians who call them assualt rifles. The rifle does not itself assualt anyone, or anything. The person behind it does. Just like a car. A gal here in Rochester NY, just got convicted for vehicular assualt and manslaughter for mowing down 5 people and killing one in her car. They did not charge the car with anything, or call it an assualt vehicle though.

    I do believe that you are going to have to take off the gas block to remove that forend. That forend is a freefloat tube, and is screwed on to the reciever. DPMS does have a quad rail for that I do believe. Check them out on the website. Also look at Brownells.

    First of all the term "assault rifle" is perjorative, and is largely used by the people who want to prevent you from having them. The overwhelming majority of these guns are used for training and target practice.

    Less than 2% of violent crimes are committed using ANY rifle, let alone military-style semiautomatic ones.

    So if you want to be a good gun owner, please don't feed anti-gun paranoia. If you want to call your gun an AR-10 clone, or a "black rifle", that's probably better.

    As to the other questions, replacing the handguards on an AR-15-like rifle is usually fairly simple assuming standard guards, though it may be a bit more complicated depending on what exactly you want to replace them with.

    In a nutshell you open the gun, pull down at the base of the retaining ring where the handguards attach in front of the receiver (its spring-loaded), slide them off, then reverse the process for new ones. The spring tension here can be hard. . .and this is one of those things that looks easier when being done by someone who is practiced at it.

    On quad rails. . .that's your call, but are you really going to stick four different accessories on the front of your gun?

    On optics, that's a big can of worms.

    But bluntly, a .308 rifle is really not an appropriate home defense weapon. . .unless you home is a castle and you are going to be defending it by sniping from the parapets.

    The .308 round is just too powerful for safe indoors use, easily punching holes through your walls, the neighbors walls, etc.

    I'd suggest a pistol or shotgun instead. With slugs and the right sights you can turn a common 12 guage shotgun into an effective 100 yard weapon, and that should be more than adequate to protect your home or person.

    So that said, for short range use, a dot type sight (either tube, reflex or holographic) is pretty good on a black rifle because it lets you get on target pretty fast and keep both eyes open. Unfortunately quality optics cost money, so don't skimp out on a $50 sight here that won't stand up to the significant recoil of a .308.

    For long range use (eg 500 yards), a conventional riflescope is best. Which one you want depends mostly on what kind of shooting you're going to do most.

    Needless to say, the ideal setup that you want to use at 50 yards is NOT the setup you'd want to use at 500 yards, and you have to make a choice there.

    If you want one setup to do both, you can that done with a quality variable power scope, preferably one with a low initial power. I'd say a 2-7x would work pretty well for short and medium/long range use, though certainly you could get away with other magnifications.

    I like to use the term black rifles for mine, but anyway. I would suggest a nice twelve guage shotgun for home defence. Still potent at 100 yards with the right loads, but less likely to go through a neighbors house if you miss. 308 is a popular sniper round so needless to say it has a lot of range and penetration so be careful of what is behind your intended target. Be careful too that you check local laws about shooting someone at a 100 yrds running away. My local says they have to be inside your home to make it legal to shoot. You can also tap a shotgun to mount optics on them also, but make sure of quality as both the shotgun and your rifle can have some serious recoil if loaded right. Have fun.

    WELCOME !!I'll side with parts of the other posts...with addition.
    First, you need money for ammo. The thing you need a big supply of is PATIENCE. Make yourself some.

    Use your DMS for what it was made for....reach out and touch some stuff. Regarding the quad rails, what kind of poop gadgets are you going to put on this fine RIFLE. For one, low cost laser is NG at range. Also, many of the mulit-rail 'things' offered today really are not stable enough to be repeatable at 100 yd range. A scope is the only thing I can think of right now, and you probably can do that 'as is'. I'm REALLY NOT dissing you, the 'add-on' game usually doesn't improve your rifle. Invest in reloadable ammo when prices stabilize, and teach your body to shoot that fine 308...(the one I really want [:p])
    A rifle is a very poor home defense weapon..if your on defense inside you need a handgun or short shotgun so you can move around.
    Besides, you need to buy another gun....not add-ons to the one you have. And you WILL have enough money for a good auto pistol for the bucks you will eventually spend. Get a good maker, lightly used, 1911 in 45acp WHILE YOU CAN !.

    Last....PATIENCE is what is needed most. Don't shoot 300 rounds every few weeks. Practice your skills, shooting maybe 50 rounds over an hour or so, twice a week. You WILL get it, it just takes time and PATIENCE.

    congrads on a great rifle,to replace the handguard with a drop-in quad rail is a 5 minute endeavor,if you want to add a free floating handguard you'll need an action or upper receiver block(40$)a quality barrel wrench(30-40$)the new handguard w/barrel nut(120-300$)and GOOD DETAILED INSTRUCTIONS.ar15.com,among others, has these posted as stickys.trijicon,aimpoint,elcan,eotech all make super scopes/sights for AR (America's Rifle)type weapons,read their lit. to find your preference.your 308 is pretty ideal for a "do most,go-to"gun,but as already said,in the home,or urban/suburban setting,over penetration could have unintended consequences.hope this helps,welcome to GB.NEW-if it already has a factory free floating handguard then you'll just need the same brand or one with same threads to replace.much easier than removing the whole shebang,you might still have to temporarily remove the gas block/front sight base to get old one off,new one on.theres also add-on rails,that bolt to the existing handguard,if you want to add just one or two accessories

    thanks guys for your responses, sorry for the term assault rifle as I seem to have hit some nerves. I am all set with pistols for the home as I possess a 9MM S&W and a .38 revolver. I do eventually intend on purchasing a shotgun but for now am refraining from spending any more cash since I spent/ am spending a lot (by my standards)on my AR10........dppatrol I see you said "you'll need an action or upper receiver block(40$)" for a fee floating rail,,,This rifle already has a free floating rail do I still need that part? ..More importantly would I save money having a gunsmith do this instead of purchasing those tools?

    Very nice rifle and welcome to this forum. The good folks here are very helpful and will help correct some of us from time to time if terms are used out of context or incorrectly. Many of the folks here have a tremendous amount of knowledge they are willing to share. I used "clip" once instead of "magazine" in describing a problem and was corrected and reminded of the proper terminology. In the long run, it helps us communicate better, don't feel like you hit a nerve. Its just a reminder that the public is brainwashed by terms like assault rifle until the word conducts a negative meaning.

    Hello Bobby- PLEASE don't call any semi auto an "assualt" rifle. This is just a left wing, anti gun term used by the left. I don't see this weapon serving both your needs, since they are at opposite ends of the spectrum. If you don't want a handgun for home defense, you need to consider a short barrel shotgun. Good luck!!!
