Golden State Arms question
My brother just bought rifle, It say's Santa Fe Model 1946 Golden State Arms Passadena California. # on the bottom is 1164 The guy that sold it to him say's it's a 30.06 but it dosen't say that anywhere? It has a Weaver K4C3 Weaver 1000 USA scope with #'s that say 294981. What can you guy's tell me about this? and how do we know it it is a 30.06, I read it might be a 303?

Even with photos it might be a problem identifying the specific caliber the rifle is chambered for. Golden State Arms has been out of business for more then 40 years. Nobody knows how many hands the rifle has been through since then, or what they did or did not do to it? Best and safest thing to do would be to take it to a knowledgeable gunsmith and have a chamber cast made, then have him inspect and test fire it for headspace problems. 0 -
Take the stock off,,,,I had one and the caliber was marked about 1/2 inch below the wood line...worth a shot..nambu 0 -
The only Santa Fe arms that I heard of were British No 5 Jungle Carbines. If yours has a flash suppressor/bayonet lug with about an 18 inch barrel bolt action with a detachable 10 shot magazine and a rubber butt pad then you have a British No 5 Lee Enfield Jungle Carbine and its in the British .303 cal. Some where near the 30.06 & 7.62x54 Russian in performance. 0 -

Ok I found out it's a K 98 Mouser action it was orinaly chambered in 7.9MM it's now 30.06. I'm told it's a very fine shooter. The barrel is very shinney with very little wear. I don't know what it's worth but My brother paid $200, I'm told the scope is worth $75.00 so I think he got a good deal.

I bought one of those rifles about October of last year from a local pawn shop. I gave $275.00 out the door with no scope on it.
I like the rifle and paid another $45.00 to have a recoil pad put on it. The plastic butt plate was not original to the gun and poorly fitted. It needed to be replaced anyway so I had a recoil pad put on it. It shoots good and I like the fit of the stock to my size.
Sounds like your brother got a good deal.

Your rifle sounds very similar to the one I have. I don't remember what I paid for it but it was more than $200 and it did not have a scope on it. You got a good deal. 0 -

I happen to like the older Weavers and see no problem with them other than the fact they are not the newest in technology. Your brother's rifle is a good solid hunting rifle that will still outlast any of us in the long run. As rufe-snow suggests, it's important to get the chamber checked along with the headspace.
