trigger pull on a S&W model 36

Guys i have a little question for ya.
I got my wife a S&W model 36 for home defense and it seems to have a little to much trigger pull for her.
Is it possible to lighten up the pull by taking it to a smith?
Any and all advice is appreciated. thanks

    Lucky for you, the J-frame S&W's are not only easy to improve, but inexpensive.

    Wolff makes a spring kit for this model, available from Brownell's. You can do it yourself if you have the proper tool & are familiar with R&R of the sideplate. But, a gunsmith won't charge much for the job, as it takes 10-15 minutes. Have your defense ammo handy, as the Wolff kit contains several different weight springs & you may need to verify that the selected springs will reliably fire the ammo you use.

    If your gun has the narrow, ribbed trigger, you can replace it with a wide, smooth one. This will lower the perceived trigger pull by spreading out the effort over a larger area of her finger.

    S&W makes a light trigger spring for the M-36..if you want/need to keep it all original. In my case, the girl just handed it to me when I was at the service window behind the S&W main bldg. You can order it directly from the factory if you want.

    S&W does not approve lightening the hammer spring, or so I was told the day I was there (I asked). I'm sure it's a liability thing more than a functionality thing. Best, Joe

    Lightening the rebound/trigger spring by itself may not provide enough force for the rebound slide to cam the hammer back to its' retracted position.
    Try it and see.
    Lightening the hammer spring may not give you reliable ignition.
    Again, try it and see.
    I've tried both and now will try Federal primers as I understand they are softest.

    If it is for home defense, why such a small revolver? Does it need to be concealed.

    I asked the same question to the lady at the counter at 'smif. She said the rebound slide spring is the lightest that will guarantee a reliable trigger/slide return with a full-power mainspring. So I went with her recommendation. Besides, she was cute. Best, Joe

    I wanted something small enough so she wouldnt be overwhelmed with the weight or bulk. she is not the gun toting mom you see. its just somthing that makes her feel safe. heck i even put in shotshells. to reduce recoil. we live in WI. so its pretty safe, but i do travel for work. thats just about it in a nutshell.

    .38 shotshells are really good for killing snakes or rats.

    They're not so hot against angry humans.

    With respect, if recoil is an issue, I'd suggest .38 wadcutters instead. They're weak, but they should pack much more of a punch than shot.

    If you're going to the trouble of modifying the gun so that your wife can actually shoot it, don't you want to make sure it will launch an effective round?

    first i have to get her out from behind a romance book & take her on the range.
