Help with value of custom rifle

Hello all,

I could use some help on determining the value of this rifle. I'm selling it on consignment for a widow. I have a couple folks locally interested and also may put it here on GunBroker. Problem is I have nothing much to compare it to on the auction side to know what it may be worth.

Here are the details from a note from deceased husband that was enclosed in the rifles case.

"Long Range 300 Holland & Holland
Custom German Walnut Wood Stock
Falling Blocks Works Action
Target Trigger
30" Stainless Steel Hart Target Barrel
Built In 1965
By Pete Bell Custom Guns"

Now the rifle shows use and there is a pretty good spot of pitting on the left side of the action. Everything else is great. One more thing to take into consideration when placing a value is there are no caliber markings on the barrel as well as no markings by this Pete Bell, whom I haven't been able to find anything online about. I'm guessing he was not one of the "top" well know smiths of the time.

I'm looking for a realistic un-inflated value based on what it is and condition, without the scope, just the rifle and base.

    UNUSUAL design on both the butt-stock and fore-arm may appeal to some and a turn off to others. A shame it was not maintained well as most likely cost some money to have made. I would say $500.00 + or -

    Edit hello jbw1776 I don't profess to be the end all to values on single shot rifles "I do own a Sharps Borchardt and a Remington Hepburn" both single shots of some note. and I do know what a SCHUETZENS style stock looks like maybe I was too harsh on my value of this piece. I hope you can get the Lady out a money pinch . The items I saw was the stock and forearm were more like DUTCH MODERN furniture and far from the classic style of schuetzens rifles. that along with what I am sure is a very strong action gives me cause for question/alarm. If they cant even get the lettering on the side correct in it's presentation. "looks like it was done in Afghanistan by a goat herder" then I would be suspect to their attention to detail on other parts of their action . I will have to get out the hot sauce to put on the crow I will have to eat if this rifle sells for good money [:I] LOL

    The Falling-Block Works Inc. actions are top of the line for strength & quality. They were made in 4 models, yours appears to be the model J. , 3rd in the series of designs. This model was introduced in 1974. The FBW actions are not copies, they were original designs by the Fix brothers.

    You have a high quality custom rifle built on a rare custom single-shot action whose strength is second to none.

    Your rifle is stocked in the classic European "schuetzen target" style. Altho this style is not as well known as the hunter's style of rifle, never the less will have a serious appeal to many.

    If it was my responsability to sell, I would start at $3K & expect nearly twice that.

    Thanks for the extra info Jim. Don't know if it would bring that or not but it would get the widow out of a real bind and surely make her day if it did.[8D]

    Then how come in the note the deceased left he stated "Built in 1965"? Just wondering if it's a different model or something.

    Depends on how old the guy was 75, 65 easy misstake to make for an Ill elderly person. It may depend on when he made the note, in his last days?
