300 savage model 99 question on model

have a 300 savage lever and with model 99, where do ya find or how to find out the letter that it would be? Notice alot of model 99 but all seem to have a letter to it. trying to figure out what this gun would be worth.

Also have a 257 roberts and trying to figure a value on this. thank you for any help

    Get on the internet and find a sight which deals with Savage 99s. Your best bet is to look for a small reference book by Murray which picrures and describes variations of the 99. That is what I needed to do to identify the 2 I have.

    I would also suggest posting several pics and we can identify it.

    I have such a rifle and there is no A, B, etc. It has a pistol grip stock; I assume that means it was made after WWII.

    It's obviously not a Model 99.
    If you really want to bring the experts out of the woodwork post some good pictures.

    Savage did not label any of the 99s with a model letter. They are really production variations where the forend was changed, calibers added or deleted etc. The letters were added later to differentiate the various variation states over time. I can't keep them straight without the book. You can go to http://www.savage99.com/ to determine when your rifle was made (up to 1952, after that no records are available) which will help eliminate some possibilities.

    Your request for information on the .257 Bob is like saying, "I have a Ford, what is it worth?" Give us make, model description of condition in % of new. (5%, 80%, 70%, it all makes a difference. If it is a 1960 Winchester model 70 it will be worth a lot more than if it is a 1970 rifle, or if it is a model 70 sold by Sears with the J.C. Higgins name, it will be worth less. So all the detail you can give will be a help.

    jimbo show me some pics or give us a detailed description about the gun - barrel length, style or looks of the forearm, checkering if any, butt plate style, position of the safety, and anything else you see.we can pretty much tell the year of manufacture by the serial # or you could go to www.savagela.org there is alot of pics with model variations there. good luck.

    Serial numbers will give the age and possibly help with the particular model. For instance, early model 99F were take down models and later model 99 F were lightweight models and the F appears on the barrel. Model 99's are sometimes refered to as pre-mil or post mil. This is a reference to whether or not the serial number is less than or over 1,000,000. Later model 99's have a tang safety. Aluminum and brass cartrige counters are also an indicator of when the rifle was manufactured. Also check out the Savage board at 24 hour Campfire, the guys there can help you also.
