Alternate ammo for a .410?
Ok, I am not really looking to do this, but it got my curiosity up. I read in some other sites forum that you can shoot .45 colt ammo in a .410. One guy (from South America) says he regularly shoots 30-30 ammo in a .410 shotgun with no trouble, and "quite accurately despite the smooth barrel"
Anyone ever done this? The 45 colt I could maybe see (think I might have even heard that before somewhere) but 30-30?

It is a poor idea to even consider shooting a .45 caliber bullet through a .410 dia. barrel!!!!! 0 -
I agree, but just read that some were doing it. I found a couple more threads from a Google search that these guys are saying 30-30 in a .410 barrel will work, but that 45 long colt is not a great idea because:

Neither are a good idea. The 45 cal bullet is way bigger than the .410 barrel, and you will run the risk of stressing and splitting the barrel. The 30-30 is a no brainer to stay away from.
They do make some pistols and revolvers chambered for the 45 Colt/ 410. These are really long chambered 45 Colt diameter barrels. They are chambered long enough to house a 2 1/2 or 3 inch 410 shotgun shell.
Back to the original inquirey...it is never a good idea to shoot anything in a firearm that it is not marked for. They do that for a reason.

I am familiar with the Judge. Maybe that is why some people think (or thought) they could use 45lc in a .410 rifle. Not sure where the idea for 30-30 came from though.

I had an old breakdown .410 that said on the barrel it could be used with .44 cartrigdes, but i am pretty sure it was made before the 44mag was invented.. I would not recomend shooting anything but ,410 shotgun cartridges through a .410 with a full choke.. I would never try too shoot a 30-30 in one, sounds like a good way to get maimed. 0 -
Can you do it? Sure. At least once. The Judge and the T/C 45/ 410 were MADE to do that. Your Iver Johnson .410 was not. Has it been done? Sure. Has it also blown up guns? Yep. Will it blow up the first time? Maybe. Say, what was that line from Dirty Harry? "You gotta ask yourself- do I feel LUCKY? Well, do ya, punk?" [:p]
Re: 44/410, that was the .44 Extra Long SHOT cartridge- a special round that was, in some opinions, the forerunner to the .410 shot shell. There was a gun called the Marble Gamegetter that could fire .410 OR a round ball load (headstamp .44 GG), but again, it was MADE to do that.
Check the SAAMI pressures for .410 shotshells, then check the SAAMI pressures for .45 Colt, and .44 Magnum. Some difference there.0 -
The 30-30 bullet is far smaller than the shotgun bore diameter, so pressures are not a problem. The case will fit in the chamber. Accuracy will suck, and the brass will be "fire-formed."

Some 45 long colt guns are designed to shoot 410 shotshells.
410 GUNS AR NOT DESIGNED TO SHOOT 45 LONG COLT OR ANYTHING ELSE.
