Humidity and gun damage
I live in the rockies where the humidity is really low. I just put in a while house steam humidifier to get humidity up and save my sinuses and lung membranes and wood floors.
I have my humidifier set at 35-40%. Can that cause rust damage to a gun just sitting on the wall?

Potentially yes, particularly if it is an outside wall which will get cold in the winter and may cause condensation on/in the rifle. I you are only storing in a closet besure to put guns against inside walls and consider using a golden rod or keeping a light bulb burning to dry the air. 0 -
In Colorado, not even a beer bottle sweats. If you have a whole house humidifier, that level should not be a problem. A room humidifier that sprays on the gun would- since it will be much higher in that area.
When we moved to CO, had problem with antique furniture and humidity levels. Can remember watching rain that fell, but never made it to the ground.
I now live in VA, where you do not have to water your lawn every third day!0 -
If the gun is a wall hanger just make sure it is well oiled or coat with Otis Dry Lube and Trewax. 0 -
You could always bolt your safe down in the garage. Or cut off the vents in the room that the safe is in, to try and keep humidity down. 0 -
You don't need that high an RH to offset the Colorado dryness. About 20% works just fine. 0 -
If any moisture can condense on your gun, then you have a definite potential rust problem.
I would also add that its absolutely possible for unprotected steel to rust in a humid atmosphere without obvious condensation forming.
Still, its pretty easy to coat the bore and outside of your gun with gun oil and eliminate most of the rusting risk.
Obviously, another solution is to store the gun in a dehumidified safe, cabinet, or other airtight/watertight container with dessicant inside to keep things dry.0
