Ok...I have a Sentinel 12 gun safe that I use to store some of my collection. I think I bought it at WalFart at the end of the season for next to nothing. It works fine for the typical homeowner/gunowner who has kids and wants to bolt it to the floor/wall. Make sure that the humidity in the room is low and it's heated. Also, put one or two of those moisture packs in it. You may want get anal like me and use a dehumidifier. Hope this helps![:)]0 -
In Virginia, or any humid state, I would use a golden rod or keep a light bulb burning in the safe at least. 0 -
I've looked at the Cannon safes, looked pretty well made for the money. They are fire resistant, not sure what the rating is. I'm not sure if you can get one for $500 but I have seen them around Ky for $650 +/- 0 -
I was looking at a safe from Stack-On before I decided on a Liberty Fire Safe. Our local Dick's Sporting Goods had one in stock for around $400 + delivery to the curb on a lift gate truck ($75). With the current economy like it is, you'd be surprised the deals you can make with a local company, like this Liberty franchise.

...A good new gun safe is going to cost you...$500 is pushing it, $750 and your getting well within the ballpark.
...Always try to place your safe(s) in a corner of the room that makes it very hard for anyone to get a pry bar to the door and get any leverage, and bolt it/them down.
...I gave up golden rods for the dehumidifiers that are batt operated/rechargeable. They have the crystals in them...when the crystals turn pink/red, they have a gauge of sorts that shows as the crystal stop absorbing as they should...take it out, let it air dry until the crystals turn back blue in my case...and it/they are ready to go again. They can be hung, or placed on a shelf or the floor of the safe.
....Remington is just one Co. that makes these, several brands out there, fairly new I think, maybe around for a couple of years or there abouts(?)...about $20-$30 each...and work as well or better than the more exspensive, original cash outlay/operating cost of the long running Golden rod...[^]

I think the question is what do you want for a door lock? and do you want fireproof and/or waterproof.
'lockers' usually seem to have just a simple key lock.
Safes have thicker doors, and 3-5 bolts that are supposed to lock into pockets making the door more secure.
Safes that are fire proof have think concrete? linings. This makes them heavy, and expensive. They're the best protection for you guns of course, but may be overkill if you just want to keep the kids from playing with your firearms.0 -
stack on is probably the best value, but for a little more, look at the centurion line by liberty.
inside theyre the same as the standard liberty safe. the fire rating is a little less, mine is 1200 degrees for 30 minutes.
I have two centurions with analog (dial) combination.
the digital combo's are about $100 more but alot faster to get into.
the analog is a 5 number combo.

Depending on what you get, make sure the floor will support it. I placed my safe (24 x 36) on a 4x4 base to spread the load over a larger area on over additional joists. 0 -
Here is the question you should ask yourself first. What are my guns worth??? If you have quite a collection or some really valuable guns, you might want to save some more and get a good fireproof and waterproof safe such as a liberty. It will run you about 1300 dollars but it is a great investment. My wife also keeps her expensive diamonds and our personal documents in it. We can leave the house and feel much safer now. She was all for it when she realized the kids couldn't get in it and our stuff would be protected if the house burned down or was robbed.Dont go cheap on something like this, you will regret it.
