11-87 Safety Question

I recently purchased a black synthetic stock and fore-end replacement set for my Remington 12 ga. light contour 11-87.
A problem...when replacing the wood fore-end, the synthetic replacement piece will not fit correctly over the magazine tube unless the gas cylinder collar is removed.
Will the gun fire safely without the gas cylinder installed?

  It will not function with any of the gas system parts removed.

  Went to the help desk at Remington....they indicated the following:
  
  "Thank you for contacting Remington. The new fore end you have purchased is designed with the gas collar area re-enforced so that you do not have to use the gas collar. So you can install the new fore end without your old gas collar."
  
  Good to know...didn't think they would sell and advertise the product to fit 1100 and 11-87 if it didn't. I just wanted to be safe!
