Winchester 73
This '73 was part of a trade some years ago and I am curious about the "filler" that is in place of the original rear site. I requested a letter in 1993 that stated the rifle was 44 cal, 26" octagon barrel, plane trigger, received in the warehouse 9/23/1899, shipped from the warehouse on 9/30/1899, and one other arm in the order. The cleaning rod is missing as is a part of the tang site. The barrel is marked 44 WCF and the elevator is marked 44 CAL. I would be interested in your opinion of condition and possible value. Thanks

Additional info. Omitted a photo of the barrel marking so have posted it here. Barrel measures .824" at the muzzle and .945" at the breech (across the flats). Thanks again for you help! 0 -
It is an interesting Model 1873 Sporting Rifle.
The first thing that struck me as being odd (out of place) is the placement on the barrel of the magazine tube retaining ring. Compared to what is expected (normal), it is several inches farther from the muzzle. I have never seem one located in that exact position before. That said, it is factory original as it is.
As for the rear sight slot filler, it is not original to the rifle, as it is readily apparent that some bumbling moron was real careless when he tried driving the original sight out, and dinged up the barrel... a negative hit to the collector value.
The Marbles tang sight is most likely not original either, but does not negatively affect the value.
The butt stock shows very noticeable signs of having been sanded and refinished... a negative hit to the collector value.
On the plus side, all of the steel parts (with the possible exception of the butt plate) appear to be untouched and original.
If I had to put a price tag on it, I would ask $2500, but be willing to bargian a small amount.0 -
