Steyr Hunter Can't get the Bolt Back in!

Call me stupid! Whatever, but I removed the bolt while cleaning the rifle. It will not go back in. The bolt head & extractor lines up with the ejection port. It will not travel the last 3/8 of an inch necessary to close the bolt. I have removed the firing pin and spring thinking the lack of spring tension would allow me to find the proper rotation easier! Not happening, I have put quite a bit of rotation pressure on the bolt head and handle and nothing wants to rotate? The fear of forcing things brings me to the experts for some instructions. PLEASE HELP I have tried everything, safety positions, holding the trigger down. Except brute force, but where?

    MOdel 96? I can take a look at the book tonight, I don't remember off the top of my head either.

    I can not find the manual to verify Model 96. The box states Model: Pro Hunter 25-06 Any help greatly appreciated!

    Pro Hunter should indeed be the model 96. "When reinserting the bolt into the reciever, the roller tang safety must be in the "Safe" position. Hold the bolt by the bolt handle and insert it into the receiver. When inserting the bolt, rotate the bolt so that the bolt handle slides into the slot in the receiver. Push the bolt forward to close." Do be sure the rifle is unloaded and the magazine is removed.

    If it were only that simple! The bolt stops with a solid metalic klunk 3/8" short of full forward travel. No matter where the safety is. Bolt wont enter or exit without the extra safety "hump" being extended / up. I did just try pushing forward on the bolt it won't go that last 3/8"??

    It sounds like the cocking piece is in the fired position at the bottom of the cocking notch. I'm not anywhere near my references but I think this firing pin assembly uses a bayonet lock into the bolt body? You have to take the firing pin out of the bolt body, compress the spring and rotate the cocking piece into the correct position then reassemble it into the bolt body.

    That makes sense because the manual states to hold the trigger while rotating the bolt handle but there does not seem to be any tension on the pin spring. I have re-assembled the bolt / firning pin assy several times. I am going to try again. Even when I try to install the "gutted" bolt it won't go all the way in? I will try and get it cocked and assemble it again. I have been wrestling with this for days hoping for a new perspective each time i go back to it. I know it sounds like I am inept but believe me please when I say I am usually very capable with something like this. I just can't see what I am missing!!

    I will see if I can pull out my 96 Hunter and try to figure out what your problem is. Maybe we can get two whose bolts won't go in.[:0]

    To all that tried to help. Get this! The problem was created by my using a chamber brush! Thats right! There is a rotating locking lug ring within the RECIEVER that ROTATES ! That was the problem when I used the chamber brush it rotated 180 and stopped the bolt from going home. It took my gunsmith 4 hrs to find but he did! He may not be the worlds best but he is the best in my eyes! His name is David Brown.
