Help: Tactical, Service and "P"

Can some explain to me the GENERAL differences between Tactical vs. Service? And what makes a pistol a "P" model so special?

    Well i am not sure I understand your question but A good "tactical" semiauto should have night sights, a light/laser rail that will keep a laser completely rigid, a good trigger and other specialized features that make it more user friendly under all circumstances. i think the trend since 2001 is for all cops to have a pistol that has the above things.. if you mean "+p," All that means it is built to handle high pressure loads. in other words it can shoot ammo that is loaded hotter then the traditional loadings call for.

    I have been looking to get a new pistol. I am looking a the Springfield XD and they have a "Tactical" model and "Service" model. I can see different features on each but wonder if there is something that most TACTICAL gun have and most SERVICE guns have.

    As far as the "P" I have a Ruger P89 and my sone has a Sig P232 and I see other pistols that use the P prefix. Could it mean Police? Do you think that pistols with a "P" prefix indicates they can shoot a hotter load?

    No that is just part of the designation of the handgun, the "P" in p232 is probably an abbr. of "pistol." A pistol has to be rated (+p)to shoot +p rounds safely..

    i believe the xd tactical/service designations refer to length,one is 5" one is 4".

    The P in a model name means whatever the manufacturer wants it to mean. Kind of like GT in a car name, which can mean Grand Touring, Garden Tractor, or anything else.

    In general, we think of "service" as the type pistol carried by most police officers who work the street. Some departments have a "SWAT" or some other special duty team that will use a "tactical" model; these will have have a flashlight or laser attached, or some other modification that suits their particular needs. Again, this is a marketing tool, & names mean whatever the manufacturer wants them to mean.

    Correct: XD Tactical is 5", XD Service is 4". They used that sort of assuming that uniformed police would carry the shorter 4", and SWAT types might like the longer 5".

    you are correct I own one of each and love them both you cant go wrong with either one
