New shot gun shells in 1917 Parker shot gun
I inherited a 12 guage side by side Parker shot gun. Patent date is 1917. Is it safe to use todays 12 gauage shells in this gun? A gun shop salesman said I should verify that the load was safe.
I checked the gun barrel. It says the barrel is vulcan steel. There is no indication of it being a Damascus barrel. Is there any other distinguishing charateristic that would indicate what type of barrel it is? The serial number is 221361.

Hi....I, too, have inherited a 12ga. Parker, from 1915. My shotgun has steel barrels made by Parker for my father back in the thirties. My father never shot the original Damascus barrels, but hunted with modern ammo using the newer steel barrels for many years. If your gun has Damascus barrels, do not shoot it under any circumstances, with any load.....it could have disastrous results! If your gun has modern steel barrels, have a gunsmith inspect it, and passing his inspection, should then be safe to shoot with modern ammo. BT 0 -

If your gun has Damascus barrels, hang it on the wall. If it has
fluid steel barrels and is otherwise in good shape, it should be safe to shoot lighter lead shot loads....like trap or skeet. Under no circumstance should you shoot steel shot, tungsten or other loads.0 -
