Remington Model Five .22 LR
I'm looking to buy a new .22 lr rifle soon. I plan to use the rifle for practice at the range and hope to put a nice Leupold scope on it. The main thing I want is for the rifle to be a bolt action rifle (mainly for accuracy and just handling the bolt) and I prefer a Remington or Winchester. I went to the remington site and found a Model Five. The rifle is a beautiful piece and I have read that it is a rimfire rifle. I've only had experience with centerfire rifles, I do not know much about rimfire rifles. From what I have read I just know that the cartridge is different. Most of my local gun shops haven't even heard of this gun. Wal-Mart will order it for me for $300 and I think that is a great price. The appearance of the gun reminds me of the model 700.

The 3 different calibers, of course, are not interchangeable. Difference between center and rim are the priming- rimfires have priming around the perimeter of the cartridge rim, where centerfire has a replaceable primer in the center. Incidentally, rimfires are not reloadable. While 22 LR is generally less expensive ammo, I pay about @20/ 50 rds for true Match quality ammo, so depends on what you will be shooting.
Very pretty rifle, and Remington does make a nice rifle, however, this appears to be more of a sporter than a serious target rifle. Note the weight, and compare to weight of a .22 benchrest rifle. If you are looking for a SERIOUS benchrest rifle, this may not be it.0 -

Well, there are some SERIOUS 22 target rifles out there- Winchesters CZs, Kimbers, etc- a lot of them European. And priced seriously, as well. Scroll down to the Mossberg 44 US. Good rifle for a beginning benchrest shooter, at under $200 I feel it IS "more gun for your money" (Mossberg's ad line) There are some hoops to jump thru with CMP, but not hard to do.
Also go over to the auction side, and search for Mossberg 44, Mossberg 144, Mossberg 46. You may be pleasantly surprised. They all can be scoped, and event with mount, rings, scope, you are still not reduced to standing on a street corner with a sign that says "Will Work for Ammo". [:p]0 -
That particular rifle is imported, and not made by Remington. You used to be able to buy it as a Charles daly, and before that as EAA. While I am sure it is a decent rifle, Remington's elevated price has put it in a league with better rifles. If you want a tackdriver out of the box, and one that is rock solit, check out the CZ 452, and 453. I have both, with the 452 in 22LR, and the 453 in 17 HMR. no one at the club wants to see that 22 coming when we have out 22 LR shoot.
About another nice rifle that you can get is the Browning A-Bolt 22. You can find them on the auction side. Extremely accurate, as are the Remington 541's. Don't be afraid to buy a good used one.

One of my bosses just ordered a Browning A-Bolt hunting rifle and they talk very good about it. I will check out the 22!0 -

It was one of their package deals with the 798, 799, and the Bakail made shotguns. The model 5 if I am not mistaken was also made in the Bakail factory in Russia.
