Protecting Myself While Out of State

OK, I need to go to NE to take a good pal to a lawyer to get her life straight. It's important to me (known her since she was 11) and there is no other options for her. I have some concern about my own safety. I know how to transport a pistol out of state - locked case, unloaded, out of driver's reach. My question is what is my status if, heaven forbid, I was attacked? Can I have my pistol on my person, in a private home? I'm not talking here about the ugly things that happen in case of a shooting. I'm talking about just having it on my person being from out of state. I know my IN cc permit doesn't mean s***. I have about a month to resolve this.

    If you are inside a home it makes no difference if you have a permit to carry concealed or not as you are allowed to defend yourself. Now as to what you can legally do in each state is a different matter. SOME states don't have castle doctrine laws which means you MAY have to prove to a DA that you retreated as far as you could before you fired--other states if a perp comes through the door and you feel threatened then you would be justified. NE does not honor your states' carry permit though. http://www.carryconcealed.net/

    I suppose it doesn't help right now, but if you travel out of state much you may want to consider a Utah nonresident CCW. It's recognized in about 35 states. I drive cross country for fun about once a year and it comes in handy.

    Why don't you ask the lawyer these questions?

    In general, in MOST (but NOT all) States, you are permitted to carry a pistol on your OWN private property without a license.

    You can check NE state law on this.

    In practice, if you are inside the home of a friend carrying a gun (particularly if its concealed) who the heck is ever going to know until/unless you shoot someone?

    In that scenario, if the shooting itself is clean, you should be OK. If not, you'd be subject to prosecution even if you were licensed with the pistol.

    Get a 5 pound or so dry powder fire extinguisher. Works almost as good as pepper spray. Keep is handy while traveling. Keep a first aid kit in the car as well. Best of all, it is not a weapon-just say you thought there was a fire is why you have it! Just do not call it a weapon.
