federal firearms license

as a disabled veteran I am overwhelmed by all the ads for obtaining an ffl. I live in a small midwest town. I'm unsure how best to go about getting one? can anyone offer some advice?

    How would one go about applying for an Federal Firearms License? Also, what are the costs associated with obtaining an Federal Firearms License? Is an FFL the same thing as a Federal Firearms License? I know that as a law enforcement officer I am not required to have a permit to carry; however since I am a reserve I still have an Indiana CCW permit for when I am off duty. Could someone please enlighten me on the process?

    Best way I know of is to go to the ATF site and read what they have and request the forms you need. You didn't say what type of FFL you were thinking about. Type 03 is C&R Curio and Relic and what I have. It was just a matter of requesting the forms, filling them out, send them $30 and 2 months later, I had my License.

    I think the Type1 dealer is a little more involved, I'm not sure what is involved. I think it is along the same lines and also being fingerprinted.

    What do you want to do 94? If you want to start a real business this has many requirements. As someone said, check with the ATF. A C&R license is fairly easy to get. You can purchase many pieces and have them sent to your door. But you are not a dealer that buys and sells for a profit.

    Considering that a lot of folks ask the same question, you'd think that ATF would have a detailed response on their website. But, they don't.

    "Getting an FFL" is just 1 small step in a bigger process: "Setting up a business buying & selling firearms". Is that what you have in mind? I ask, because you can't just get an FFL as a way of buying your own guns at wholesale; ATF won't permit that.

    The kits you see advertised are worthless. You need to figure out how you are going to sell guns & where you will do that; then, you need to find out if your city/county will permit your business where you want it. And, you will have to prove to ATF that you have the needed permits, or prove to them that you don't NEED permits. It's a lot of work, & no one else can do it for you.

    It may help you to search our forum for previous discussions on the subject. Do a SEARCH on the keyword FFL.

    When you check with an ATF agent regarding getting a license the very first question is why do you want one? The next question, are you going to be going into the business of selling and buy firearms for profit, or do you want the license to further your hobby? For quite awhile I was going to apply, and I still have all the paper work to fill out, if I wished to appy, but I've decided it isn't worth the trouble. A local pawn shop will receive as many firearms as I can affort to buy. I can sell or ship firearms without a license, as long as I'm sending the firearms to an FFL holder. And, as long as I obey the laws.

    I just sent away for the info kit the BATF offers those interested in an FFL. I was interested in getting one for personal purchases. It has ALOT of paperwork and fingerprint cards that need filled out and a letter that clearly states that FFL will not be issued unless it is to conduct business and is not to be used for personal use only. Go to their website they have all the info right there if you still want to proceed.
