Is my husband right?

I own a 22.lr Beretta 21a which I keep in my purse. My husband is trying to convince me to carry his 45 colt defender. His mindset is going for the first shot, but my mindset is being able to follow up since his pistol is a handfull. any thoughts>?

    That's a good question, but if you can handle a .45 under stress, you should carry the Colt. A .22lr is tiny compared to the .45 and I would feel safer knowing that one hit will kill my target, whatever it may be, a .22 on the other hand, will not stop a person, especially if they are pumped up with adrenaline.

    I do somewhat agree with your husband, but come to your defense too.

    A small 45 is a hand full, but the 22LR Beretta, even though a deterrent, is not much more than that. That said, here is your chance to turn the tables on your husband. Time for you to get the new gun instead of him. Compromise, and get yourself a small single stack 9mm or 40S&W. Something like the Para Ordnance LDA, S&W Chiefs Special 9, or a Springfield XD. The ball is in your court...slam dunk on him!

    Janine, There are many hanguns out there for women such as the lady smith[:X]. It is made for a womans hand and come in several calibers. Still I wouldn't want any mad women[}:)] shooting at me. Not even with a slingshot.LOL. A handgun is a personal preferance and the choice should be yours. Still I would prefer my wife with a little bit more power behind her[;)]. A 38 or even a forty.     A gun YOU can accurately make hits with and are comfortable shooting is BETTER then a gun that you can not.

    If YOU are EQUALY comfortable shooting the .45 and as accurate then it comes to a question of what caliber is better.

    There is also the case of what gun will YOU ALWAYS have with you. If the .45 is too big or heavy and gets left in the (truck, car, on the desk, in the safe, ect) then it will not do you ANY good at all.

    For example I carry a full size Glock most of the time. But I also carry a .380 about the size of your Beretta the rest of the time since it is small and I can have it on me when I would not be able to carry the Glock. My small gun in my pocket does me way better then the Glock on the table.

    There are other guns in between that COULD also be good choices if YOU are comfortable and accurate shooting them.

    Since you are carrying a loaded firearm I am assuming you have a concealed weapons permit and have taken the associated training. Therefore lets review a few items, there are only certain circumstances where you can legally use deadly force...so the question is will the 22lr stop the fight quickly...the answer is it will probably stop the fight but the question is when. 22lr have a habit of bouncing around inside the human body, they tend to leave a dirty wound channel (lots of germs and infection) but it don't usually stop the fight quickly. The guy will probably die but it may take awhile. I would tell your husband, ok to a bigger caliber...but go the a local gunshop shooting range and try out everything that fits your hand comfortably and something you can hit the kill zone with at 7 yds. Try your Beretta too. I would personally recommend a S&W Model 60 with 38 Specials and 125 lead HPs...the all important point question here is, can you hit the kill zone all the time with it...if you can only do with with a 22lr, then carry the 22lr, but I would work to improve my proficiency until I could do it with a 38 Special. A few 22lrs in the center mass, are worth more than a 100 45acp misses.

    A 22 can be lethal, but if you have to pull it out, the person on the other end will think more about stopping before being shot more if you are carrying something large enough to put their finger in the barrel. I lived in a bad area in my younger years, and carried a 44 magnum. Had to pull it out three times, and all times the other person decided to quit before being shot.

    If the 45 is too much, then consider something in between. But the 22 is better than not carrying anything, or having something to carry, but leaving it behind because of size and weight.

    Another consideration is the weight. Unless you frequent high crime areas, the chances of you actually using whatever is in your purse is very, very small. However, it will be taking up space in and adding weight to your purse every day. I know several women who got talked into carrying a "big enough" gun and after a few months of lugging it everywhere decided to leave it home.

    Make it a pistol you can access easily and reliably. A handgun you can't get to is worthless

    I love my wife more than words can say, and I completely trust her. If she told me she was more comfortable with a 22, I would say "Whatever makes you feel safe and secure Honey".

    Carry both of them.Tell the hubby to go himself another gun.You both will be happy.

    45 is a standoff weapon.

    a 22 is break contact weapon.

    bottom line...with a 45 you stand your macho ground and repel attackers.

    with a 22, you shoot and run to keep them from following you.

    which do you want to do? that will be your answer.
