1885 winchester stampings
I picked up an 1885 Winchester barreled receiver that has no "winchester" stamped on the upper tang. Was it buffed off or did some early versions only bear Winchester on the barrel stamping???

Winchester did not begin marking the upper tang on the Model 1885 until circa serial number 96850 (late 1904).0 -
Just for everyone's benefit, the pictures below show each of the three different upper tang roll stamps that Winchester used for the Model 1885 Single Shot.
Type 1... Type 1 was used on all the variations in production in the 1904 - 1911 timeframe.
Type 2... Type 2 was used almost exclusively on the Second variation (high-wall) .22 rim fire Winder Muskets.
Type 3... Type 3 was used almost exclusively on the Third variation (low-wall) .22 rim fire Winder Muskets (Model 87).0 -

The "U S" and flaming ordnance bomb is found on the vast majority of the 12,700+ Model 87 Winder Muskets. The U.S. Army ordered and purchased 11,400+ of them in 1918 & 1919 for use as Training firearms. They were all chambered for the 22 Short.
