Grandpa's Winchester

I have recently been given a gun from my grandfather. That he asked me to use for hunting, which he knew I wanted to start doing. Things have changed since the short time ago when he gave me the gun and now. He is unable to speak on the phone and was just moved to a home. We will be going to see him but, it is about three hours away so I cant go all the time. I have so many questions for him but he may not be able to answer them all.
He was in the military and has a plaque on his wall from 1969 that says "Airforce cup match 1969" "Champion". I have searched a little with the serial numbers and i think it was made in 1967 but i would like to know the model of the gun??. It has a stock with an adjustable aluminum butt plate and an aluminum accessory rail up front. It has a stainless competetion barrel on it, and the chambering is .308. Is the stock custom from that time era?. I read about some military match rifles that were made that had a similar discription, but I think this was made before them??.
This gun will always be in the family so im not really interested in value but would love to know more about the gun based on description and serial number ( how many numbers are safe to post?). I was hoping it was the gun he used in the cup match but was unable to ask him but I will try. I aslo have pictures I can post of many of his plaques and pics of the rifle to help.

I have added a pic, im in the middle with 2 guns the .308 is in my right hand and my sporter varmint .223 rem is in my left. I will try and post more close ups later this is all i have of the gun right now.

It is safe to post the entire serial number. I suspect that it is a customized Model 70, with the current barrel not a Winchester product. Posting some pictures would help immensely. 0 -
When you get the chance, please post a picture of the action on both sides, and with the bolt open. I still suspect that it is a modified Model 70.

I remember reading about a real "Dinger" that use to shoot for the Air Force out of Lackland, I believe it was, during this time period. Was he an Air Force man? Check out this link ( http://www.airforceshooting.org/hilights.html ) and see if you can find your grandfather's name. If you can't find it, keep seraching under 1969 Air Force Cup Champion...people don't win this this kind of match without putting their name in the record books. Also try http://www.odcmp.com/ and search it as well.
Bert might be right about the rifle being a customized Winchester model 70, as the 70 always was a very popular match gun, especially at long ranges.

Wow I was able to find his name on the distinguished shooters pages right away. He may have been in the navy I will find out as soon as I can. I will post some more pics of his other plagues and pics when I have time today. I was taking photos of the rifle this morning but my wife said the lighting is wrong. I will get some with better light today also.
He has done palma match shooting for a long time also.

I made a mistake on what is says I had previously said champion but it says winner, Im sorry. But I have more pics that say champion.

Here is the plane he said he was in and was the gunner on the bottom front of the plane. He said he was able to stay down there while landing only a few times, as it was not allowed because of the weight distribution I think. The few times he was able to were pretty scary.

The plane in the picture looks like a Navy PBY. Sounds like your grandfather might have been a Navy man, which sounds about right if he outshot the Air Force, the Army, and probably kimi's Marines! [;)][}:)][:D]

Your grandfather was definitely a Navy man, as I recognized the uniforms quite readily... I spent 20+ years in the U.S. Navy myself (submarines).
There are just two types of ships in the world... Submarines, and Targets[}:)]0 -
