Military Rifle Experts a Question.....

I found this butt pad on the back corner of a bench while rooting around in my old neighbor's shop(I have permission to do that at any time[:D])

What does it fit? Is that filler piece actually supposed to go inside? I took it out from inside, but as you can see from the mark it left in the side view, with it in it does not leave much left to fit up on the rifle butt.

Thanks in advance for any advice.

    We used them when firing rifle grenades with filler in place "recoil pad to keep from breaking butt stock or shoulder[:p][^]

    E.D. I agree in combat you do what is needed but during training in 1964 they wanted to save the rifle stocks if fired with butt on ground we lost a bunch of stocks around the wrist etc at least that is what I was told in basic.

    Do a search on the internet using the part number that is on it! I see these at the gun show, I don't think they had the part number.

    Boy isn't that the truth about the shoulder, perry shooter! A bone jarring life long memory that has never gathered any cobwebs, even after about fifty years! [:D] I've never seen one of those pads, though, but what you say makes very good sense.

    When Gernades were fired in the Marine Corps they use the ground for the butt plate to rest on, fired like a mortor, when you are in combat I am sure that a high number of people are going to have their butt plate pad with them.

    That's the new Corps? In 1961, the entire battalion Marines (non-rates) of 3/4 fired one grenade each from the prone, kneeling, and standing in their familarization training. For the standing position shoulder the rifle, spread the feet, make a strong lean forward until the upper body weight is over the leading knee with the trailing leg straight, aim and fire. True story.

    Yep- Garand Rifle Grenade pads. And FWIW, many rifle grenades could be fired as an indirect fire round (high angle lobbing fire) with the butt on the ground, but HEAT anti-tank grenades were intended to be fired DIRECT fire (low angle) from the shoulder. And yes, they would get your attention. Yowza!

    You're right new as in having the M14 and no Garands, the only place I fired a rifle garande was in Viet Nam, never looked at rifle garnade let alone given a little rubber thing to put on to protect your shoulder. You guys pull the garnade pins out with your teeth!
