who is the antique gunsight expert?
I have an 1893 marlin with three optional sights...what are they?

Looking at your pictures and comparing them to those in Nick Stroebel's excellent book Old Gunsights it appears your sights were made by Lyman as optional for the 1893 Marlin. Anyone interested in old gunsights should have this book as it is an excellent reference. 0 -
I agree about Nick's book. The second edition is even better as both the sights and the scopes have been combined in one book at a very reasonable price. 0 -

38-55 serial number is 172000 its really got alot of options and in great shape, can't get a letter that I know of so I was trying to figure out what could have come on the gun from the factory.
it is a takedown with a half and half barrel and short mag plus these sights and nice wood (not checkered)0 -
According to Brophy, your rifle was made in 1898, give or take one year.
Strobel notes that the correct Lyman tang sight for the Marlin 1893 in 38-55 caliber would have the letter code "J" on its base. The front sight "appears" to be a Lyman No. 5A Globe. Does it have a Lyman marking on it? The rear barrel sight is the Leaf Sight, which looks to be like a Lyman Folding Leaf Sight No. 6, but might be a Marlin Leaf Sight, and this Lyman sight was made for all standard American rifles. Does this sight have any markings on it?0 -
