32-20 Reloads
I want to reload for an old 32-20 rifle. I like the IMR 4831 powder but I need some data for a safe load. Does anyone have any data or a manner to calculate it? I know there are other loads/powder mixes out there but I like the IMR 4831 in all my other rifles. Thanks for any help. I can be directly emailed at bjl722001@yahoo.com. Thanks again. Chris.

What old rifle are you planning to use? Some old rifles like the 1873 Win are not safe with hot rifle loads.0 -
IMHO, 4831 is way to slow burning for the 32-20 cartridge. It has a case capacity that is similar to modern handgun cartridges. It's doubtful if you could get enough 4831 in the case even with a magnum primer for any meaningful velocity/accuracy. If you want to be using IMR powders, your probable best bet, would be with 4227. Thats the fasting burning of the bunch.
As the previous poster noted, the 32-20 was originally a 19th Century Black Powder cartridge. If you have a rifle of that vintage, be very careful working up smokeless loads for it.0 -

The rifle in question is quite old. It has an October 14, 1884 date on the barrel and has the octogon barrel with flip up peep sites. 0 -
I'm guessing you have an 1885 LoWall Winchester single shot.
If so, the action is strong enough for high velocity loads but jacketed bullets wont do the barrel any good.
Lead bullets should be used and gas checked lead bullets for high velocity loads.
Once you've determined the make, model and serial number of the rifle
we can suggest loads.0
