True SKS "Sporter"??

Hi everyone. I come to gunbroker.com often, but only just now joined. Looking forward to some imput from SKS fans. I'm new to them, but came across one I'm told is not common. The source is usually very trustworthy, researches what he doesn't know, but I'm not sure if he's getting good info. It's a Norinco. I thought they were very common, and for commercial market only. It has a traditional stock on it, not the thumbhole version I keep seeing online, even the serial # stamped in middle of right side. The s# is all matching, has cleaning kit and a 20/30rd mag plus the standard 10rd mag. Bore is chrome lined, and has stripper clip slots. The serial number is 2900xxxx So.... is this enough info to see if it is a commercial model, older, common, uncommon? I will try to get some pictures, but as a flt attendant, it may be a cpl of weeks before I have time to do that. If I'm given specific requests for more info, I may wait until several such requests come so as to try to get the answers all at one time. I have it on hold for now while I'm researching, but the price is $750. His prices usually fall in the normal range, not high, not bargains, but I've not seen an SKS this high, but he checked other gun store & online sources. Says these are usually much higer on gunbroker. Thanks in advance for any & all imput!

    Monte555...is this guy for real? $750 for a Norinco SKS? Perhaps for a rare Tula SKS, maybe, on a great day, in great shape but about $400 to high for the standard Chinese SKS. Photos are everything, but check it out yourself on GB and see what the Chinese market is like. Things are going up in price but this sounds way out of line unless it belonged to one of Mao's bodyguards.

    If ti takes AK mags it is far less common than the fixed mag versions. However, pre election panic these were 450--500 dollar guns.

    Correct. And if it does take ak mags (sks-d like auction listed above, or sks-m), the value only goes up if it came from the factory that way - most other mag set ups are problematic. One big exception is the Chinese military 20 round fixed mag, which was designed as part of the gun.

    There was a Norino model, I believe it was called a Sporter that was a SKS than took the AK clips. Came from the factory that way, sold originally for $169.

    I can't speak to this particular gun, but I would add the following observations:

    SKS prices HAVE been shooting up lately. Two years ago, you could buy SKS rifles for under $200. Now you can barely find ANY for under $300. If only my stock account could do that!

    The ones that take AK mags have always gone for a nice premium. In this post-Obama gun buying panic market, $750 for one of these might actually be market price.

    While its not entirely clear to me why you'd rather have a $750 SKS than a fairly nice AK for the same money, the AK-mag SKS' are far rarer, so they could command higher prices (even if they aren't necessarily better guns).

    Lastly, just to be Devil's advocate, one sale at a crazy price does NOT necessarily mean that price is the true market value. Sometimes people get "auction fever" and get carried away in a bidding war, sometimes people just buy stuff without doing their homework and knowing what realistic market prices are, sometimes people just make mistakes bidding on the wrong thing, and sometimes people just have their heart set on a particular item for a particular reason, and don't mind paying extra to get it.

    Hey folks! Thanks for the feedback. I agree with a lot of the points y'all have made. I don't have time to go line by line at the moment. but a few points just off the top: I understand auction fever, don't want to pay panic prices, but would like to get some military type before the big O says I can't. (I will be getting an AR15 receiver so I can still build my gun after any possible bans) Wouldn't mind paying a premium if this is truely a more rare piece, after all, that's what has drawn my attention to this piece. I'll post more later.

    Any Chicom SKS is a commercial rifle if it has import markings. There are, maybe, a handful of military Chicoms, & they really deserve the premium prices that they bring; they were brought back from Viet Nam by GI's.

    Hi Neal! Thanks for your imput. I saw this rifle only a few hours before I had to leave town so I didn't have opportunity for pictures that would show the markings. I do remember that there was a US city/state stamped on it. I assume all Norinco's were made for the commercial market anyway. I just haven't been able to find clear & definative info yet. Such as:is the "Sporter" stamping really an uncommon or rare feature deserving of premium; is the 30rd mag automatically an AK mag; how do I know if it's a factory feature... My interest is in the uncommon more than just for the sake of an SKS. But then again, if this is above the norm for them & they won't get cheaper, maybe I should get it while I can. It's hard to know.

    if it has the "std 10 rd mag" them it is not a detachable mag model and it is not worth 1/2 of what he is asking.
    those crappy "duckbill" mags do not add much value
    buy an AR for that price

    Thanks for the respone tsavo303, but being new to SKS's, it was confusing as hell! Lol. What is a duck bill? If it has the 10rd, in a box, & a 30rd in it currently, how do I know if it factory?

    Ok folks...Is there a website that has good clear info? The opinions matter, but real data would greatly help. Keep it comin folks! Thanks for the time!
