Your husband is right that a .22LR gun is marginal for self-defense. The .22LR round is appropriate for killing small game like squirrels. The bullet is just too small and light to reliably incapacitate an adult human being by striking a vital organ. Is it POSSIBLE to stop an attacker with one? Absolutely yes it is. Can you DEPEND on it incapacitating someone? Probably not.
Sometimes just pointing a gun (any gun) at someone might convince them to leave you alone. But on the other hand, an intoxicated or high attacker might not even notice that you shot him five times with a .22, or worse, it might just make him angry!
Put differently, what is the point of carrying a gun, threatening deadly force, and having all the civil and criminal legal liability of using deadly force, without actually HAVING the deadly force available to you?
Now, on the other hand, you are right that ultimately, you have to carry whatever gun you are comfortable carrying.
I can certainly see why you might not be comfortable carrying a .45 in your purse, for multiple reasons, not the least of which is that the gun itself may be pretty heavy and bulky.
(As a side issue, I have to question the wisdom of carrying ANY gun in your purse, since a purse can be dropped, lost, or snatched away from you with the element of surprise by a mugger, but you have to make that call yourself and do what makes sense in your situation).
While the round is marginal, the .22 that you are comfortable carrying and shooting is still going to be better than a .45 that you can't hit the side of a barn with, hate to carry, or leave at home.
It certainly might be possible for you to practice with the .45 until you are comfortable with it, but as was suggested in the earlier thread, I think a good compromise is possible. Perhaps you might do better with a gun that is more powerful than a .22, that you are still comfortable shooting, but less powerful or bulky than the .45.
There are many many guns that fit in between those two extremes, including a variety of .38 special revolvers, semi-automatic guns in .380ACP, and others. It might be worth a trip to the local gun range to rent/borrow a few guns to try different ones until you find a more suitable intermediate model.

If you can look around in a well stocked gunshop, look at the Taurus PT-58, it is built like the beretta 84 and They are both chambered in .380ACP.. If you are recoil sensitive the 380 is a good comprimise. I have a PT-58 on layaway, They come with 2 19 round mags and are still small enough to fit in a medium sized purse.. Now the .380 isnt a elephant cartridge, but with hollowpoints it is alot more powerful the a 22lr. 0 -
Off duty out of town cop just killed someone here a few weeks ago outside a bar, he used a AA22LR.
not sure how he got away with having a gun at a bar. (off duty and out of towner) i talked to the offerer that was first on scene
(he was the offerer that was working my case on a felon trying to buy my SKS),
he told me when he got there and confronted the guy, told him to freeze and hands up the off duty cop started to lower one hand that had his keys in it like he was going to put them in his pocket [:0]. Our LEO had to tell him again to stop and the Leo told me he had started to put pressure on the trigger [xx(]. off duty cop almost got shot.
ER DR said it was the worst gun shot wound he has seen in some time, that little slug messed up a lot0 -
my dad a ww2 vet now long past.used nothing but a 22LR for most of his life.Yes we usually ate small game.Squirrel and cottontail are not only more available but better eating than wild hogs or deer.
Before it became a risk to your freedom.He took many a deer and hog with his 22LR.He always used high velocity hollow points.Small game had to be a head shot.you should see the damage to the meat if he missed the head.Of course he rarely missed.being a great shot.I used to sell mistletoe door to door as a kid at Christmas time that he would shoot down out of the tall trees in the swamps.by shooting the stems off.
of course the much shorter barrel of a hand gun does not achieve the same performance as an 18 inch carbine barrel.But having seen the damage these 22LR HP do.I sure as heck have plenty of respect for the round.
In fact I'm thinking about getting a concealed holster for my Sigg mosquito.Which will place a 10 shot group at close range at amazing speed.0 -

He is wrong...you should not be forced to carry a gun that you are not comfortable with. And a cocked and locked .45 1911 gun like the Defender is not the type of gun you should be carrying around loose in a purse. If you put your hand in your purse just to find something, you could easily push the safety off the gun without noticing it, and then hit the trigger, and shoot yourself or someone else.
The .22 is marginal for self defense, but according to statistics, 98% of people who pull a gun for self defense never have to pull the trigger. Bad guys don't like getting shot and usually just run away. If you do have to shoot someone with a .22, shoot them in the face (preferably in the eyes) or the base of the throat.0 -
I have an acquantance that was accidently shot in the thigh area at close range nearly 3 years ago with a .22 LR rifle. He nearly bled to death before the severed arteries were medically stabilized. He's been through 2 operations related to damage apparently resulting from infection. The wound area and surgical scars looks like he was hit by tank round.
I think if you merely pointed a .22LR at him he would die from a heart attack. His experience gave me a whole new outlook on the damage a puny .22 LR can inflict. Stop an attacker in his tracks, maybe not, but it can cause some serious damage.0 -
do not believe the stories about a .22LR will only aggravate an attacker.

I have seen deer get away and lost with a 30-06 bullet in them. I saw my dad and others on several occasions drop a deer with one head shot with a .22. A .22 will stop a person. 0 -
Where do all of you live anyway that you need to be carrying a concealed pistol in your purse or pocket? I am not saying there is anything wrong with it if I lived in a rough neighborhood I would carry one also. It's just that I don't get out of Montana very often and we still carry high power deer rifles on the gun racks of our pickups, keeps most of the bad guys away from us. 0 -

i live in pensacola, i carry because i can. i also were my seatbelt. (not because its the law but because its a safty thing)
