Remington 788 .308
I have long been a fan of the Remington 788, and have one in .243 and one in 30-30. I found a nice one in .308 cal. for 349.00. and I'm contemplating the purchase. It's in a pawn shop, but they won't come off the 349.00. Guess that's an "average" price? Thanks for any tips on this gun...

That is a bit high--the blue book I have says $350 for 100% condition. Now I'm using a 21st edition but I wouldn't imagine it being THAT far off.

there are several others in that range and some that are $500+ so I guess if a person wants one that bad they will pay the price.0 -
i love mine in 243, bought new in 1979 for $104. i also love the 308 cartridge and so for years have played with the idea of a 788 in 308 myself. i've followed them in e-auctions and gun shows at least the last 8 years. i'd say buy it--the $349 is on the low end of actual market for excellent condition. most seem $450+, and personally my guess is the auction kindly noted by ruger41 above will finish around that figure.
and it will likely continue to appreciate in the future. my 2 cents.0 -

in the last few years, the rem788 is commanding a premium. I was offered $400 for mine, but it has been bedded and recrowned with a trigger job. $400 is about the going rate from what I see. 0 -
The selling prices are in the 500.00 range. There is gaining popularity for these. Just look at the prices for magazines and bolts if you loose them. 0 -
I just sold my Rem. 788 .243 for $300.00 and the guy who got it was very happy with it. I could have probably gotten more but I wanted the money for another project.

P.S. If it is in good shape, go for it. Magazines are getting rather high when you can find them but the .243 mags. will work for the .308 and vice-versa.0 -
From what I have been seeing that sounds like a fair price. Not a steal, but definately not a rip off. Have had my .222 for years and would never sell it. 0 -

I'm glad that ATF pointed out that the Bluebook is not necessarily the end all resource for firearms values. It's a reference only and may not be up-to-date or accurate in all situations. Being published infrequently, it's often outdated by the time it comes to the booksellers shelves simply due to the frequently changing market value of firearms.
I think the better reference is the Auction side, which can give you the feel for the market flow. You need to look at it over a period of time so that you get a feel for the highs and lows, looking for the 'averages' of the sales. We all have witnessed auction frenzy and those are aberrations and not true indicators of value.
The price you mention is a decent for the M788 in .308 Win. which is the most common of the chambers produced by Remington. Value of the M788 has been on the upswing for several years now. The more desire injected into the market, the higher the prices climb. Bear in mind though that as the M788 prices approach the prices of currently available, accurate firearms, the prices for the M788 will stabilize. Not all M788's are collectible except for a couple of odd chambers so looking for investment grade in this category is not very wise.
The M788 is usually a good shooting rifle and it's value is as a shooter. Enjoy your purchase!
