M1 garand info?

I don't know much about Garands, but I think I need one![:D]
looking at a springfield M1 in very good shape.
serial # 922xxx with barrel marked 8/47
I think the serial # puts it at 1942 or 1943 (?)
If that's the production date, why the 47 barrel?
Is there a site that has basic info and prices?

  It's an Oct 42 receiver. The barrel is a replacement because the original was probably shot out during the war. Price would depend on condition and the parts in the rifle. Do yourself a favor and get one from the CMP. It will be cheaper. www.odcmp.com

  Post-war rebuilds are an interesting variation. Following WWII, the government contracted with Fabrique National in Herstal, Belgium to rebuild several hundred thousand M1 rifles in the 1947-1949 time frame. They completely disassembled all the rifles, putting the good parts in bins. They then reassembled them, using a combination of new & used parts; parts not available were manufactured primarily by Springfield Armory.
  
  You have to know your M1 parts to identify these, but no parts will date later than 1949. Many of these rifles were repaired/rebuilt later, which will make them like any other mixed parts rebuild.

  not by much! and there's a 3 month wait on orders!
  they do have some on auction, but all are more $$ than this one.
  In looking at the pics at CMP, it will probably grade Service.
  I'll ask about other parts and such.
