.45 cal reloading question
I have 1000 230gr plated 45 acp bullets (.451) from Rainer and they are 55/1000s shorter than the Hornady cowboy 255 gr bullets (.454) I load over 16.0 gr of 2400 in my 45 colt (LC).
Would it be safe to load the plated acp bullets in 45 colt brass to use them up?
*I did load 3 of them up with a good roll crimp and I didn't see any difference in accuracy in my trial at 25 yds...but is it safe?

Yes, it's safe as long as the smaller bullets are tight and well crimped in the case. 2nd Generation and later 45LC are .450-.451.
I've had incomplete ignition problems with light bullets in the 45LC.
Some writers recommend mag or Winchester primers.
The A.R. published an article where the writer tested many powders
and settled on 9gr of Herco behind a 200 gr lead bullet as the best and cleanest light bullet load for 45LC.0 -
thank you...yes 2400 is a tad dirty but I bought 8#s of it back when powder was cheap at a gun show and I am using it up in lieu of purchasing powder at today's scalper prices.I am using CCI large pistol primers with it.
I use 26.0 gr H110/250gr XTP for my hunting load in both my Ruger BH and my '92 clone and it burns very clean using CCI lg pistol primers.0 -
The reason OAL is critical is the longer bullet will set further down in the case this decreases the amount of air space in the loaded cases. Also strange as it may seem the the heavier the Bullet the LOWER the amount of powder is normally used. IT'S all about PRESSURE so for the most part if your bullet is shorter I would load so the "base" is at the same point down from the case mouth after it is seated.as the longer heavier bullet.
EDIT Hello I don't think you are misreading my suggestion . How ever on reloading it is not wise to depend on one opinion. Let me explain why I think I am correct . A few examples OAL itself is not important unless it is TOO LONG for a chamber thus you can use every thing from 22 BB caps to 22 short to 22 long to 22 long rifle in a 22 LONG RIFLE chamber . You can use 38 short colt, 38 long colt 38 special, and 357 Mag in a gun chambered for 357 mag . The 38 special target WADCUTTER has a bullet that is flush with the end of the CASE much shorter OAL then the same loaded round with a Round Nose bullet . I have a pistol from the late 1890's that shoots a cartridge the same length as the cylinder and has a Conical bullet that the High velocity load has the bullet just out of sight down inside the case but the GALLEY load is about 1/2 inch below the case mouth. the OAL in all my data is listed as 1.60 "IF" I seat the shorter bullet to where you're saying it should be it looks like it will be 1.05 OAL...that doesn't seem safe...or am I misreading your suggestion? 0
