Removing Loctite

I have a Marlin 336 with a scope mount that seems impossible to remove. There are two screws left that will not loosen.
I believe who ever attached this mount used Loctite or something similar. Can I use nail polish remover to break the Loctite?
Does anybody know if this will damage the blueing on the gun?
Any other suggestions?

    hello. you can try nail polish remover, but you are probably going to have to heat the screws to get them to move. heat is the only thing i know of that will loosen loctite. also, try tightening the screws a little. sometimes this will break them loose.

    I have heard that if you heat up (get it hot) a piece of wire like a coat hanger and then hold it on the screw head, it will loosen up. Be carefull not to burn your hand with a very short wire. Would suggest using vice grips to hold wire. Luck!

    Heat. You can try placing a soldering iron on the head of the screw, or try heating a screwdriver that fits the slot of the screw with a torch, then placing driver in slot, wait for heat to soak thru.

    So far none of it is working...what about tapping the screws?

    Got it!
    I just cut the mount in half and moved the pieces until the screws loosened up. No damage to the rifle or the screw holes.

    You can try a screwdriver sized to slots. Strike sharply with a machinists or similarly sized hammer. Sometimes the shock will jar them loose. If that or the heat does not work, might have to go to the easy-outs.

    A propane torch will work,but don't over heat. It only takes a couple seconds.

    People get way to carried away with Loctite.

    I just went through this so I have the answer[;)]I watched my father do this for me. He took a paper clip and straighten it out. Took a tourch[:0] and held the one end of the paper clip to the screws and held the other end with a pair of needle nose pliers and heated it up. I watched as the paper clip got red and the heat worked its way down the paper clip to the screw head and melted the loctite. He then took a screw driver and backed the screw right out[:D]. He told me he has been doing that for years. He was a gun smith back in the sixtys. The cool thing is that the tourch was nowhere near the gun and the loctite melted instantly.Good luck, Oak
