Winchester Model 1892/ Cody

Just talked to Cody Firearm Museum Records Service at 9 AM EST. I was surprised when they answered right away. Very nice woman and a great help. Pretty simple to get done. Now I hope everything is on there that I am expecting. According to where you check on your serial number, my 44-40 Model 1892 was made in the year 1892 but the markings for the U. S. C. Co. are 9-13-93. Hey, I like surprises!!!

    Earnest: Winchester manufactured parts, then assembled to produce the rifle. The receiver was manufactured separately and serial numbered, then placed in a bin and shuttled to the next station. Any given receiver could sit in the bin for weeks, months, sometimes years before assembled into a rifle. Although the date of the receiver may be 1992, the date the rifle shipped from the warehouse, may be 1993. Cody's letter should have the date that your rifle was shipped from warehouse. In my rifles instance, the date "shipped from warehouse" is one day before the date stamped on the receiver. Dates of manufacture in the lists that are published are receiver dates of manufacture, not the date the firearm was shipped from the warehouse. As mentioned, these dates could be months -or years - apart.

    There are other record dates in the process of manufacture, such as polishing room records, that I am not familiar with but also are not relevant to the instant subject.

    Did the nice lady at Cody tell you the date your rifle was shipped from the warehouse? This date could be very close to the date stamped on your rifles receiver. Best wished in your quest.

    Hi Merrill,thanks for ALL the interesting information. Can't wait to get the Cody's letter on my rifle. I'm sure it will have everything I want to know in it.
    The lady I talked to at Cody's did not give me any info on my rifle. She was there just to take my info on my rifle for the Cody's letter.
    Oh, and also my money... She was just so helpful and pleasant. You don't meet too many people like that today. Not in this State of Massachusetts anyway.
    I will let you know all the info in the letter which she said will take about 2 to 3 weeks to get here. Thanks again for helping me along. May the sun always shine upon you, Ernie Jutras

    Hello Ernie,

    I personally know both Jesi (Jessica) Bennett, and Connie Schuster, and they are indeed very nice ladies. Each year in June, I spend two weeks at the Cody Firearms Museum (as an official volunteer), and I work in the same office with them[:)].
